The first drill is a set of two rondos with the players already bibbed up as a warm up and to also improving the players passing ability and ability to control the ball under pressure. The fact that this is a repeated exercise means that the players will be familiar with the drill and you can clearly see the improvements throughout the weeks.

Adaptations (Progressions & Regressions): A progression for this drill is that I would add another defender into the rondos so that there is a higher concentration of defenders to attackers, making it harder for the players with the ball to keep it. A regression for this drill is that I would remove the defender from each rondo and make it so that the players have to follow their pass instead so that its not too easy but also difficult enough as they have to think about movement off the ball as well as passing accuracy.

Challenges, Conditions or Targets: I will challenge the players to bring it down to one touch passing but I will add a condition of a two touch limit so that the passing within the rondos is at a higher intensity, requiring a greater ability of passing and a higher level of passing accuracy in particular. A target for this drill is if one team can make ten consecutive successful passes before the other team then they get a point to add competition.

This is only a short drill where I will drill the ball into the players feet and the player has to control the ball and keep it inside the square made of yellow cones. I will keep the ball on the ground so that it is focused on close ball control on the floor as the players first touch is not great as seen in competitive fixtures.

Adaptations (Progressions & Regressions): A progression for this is that I will drill the ball in from closer so that the players have less time to prepare for their first touch and so that the sting of the it is not taken away as much. A regression for this drill is that I will expand the square in which they have to control the ball in so that they have more space to control the ball and therefore it is easer to complete this exercise.

Challenges, Conditions or Targets: I will challenge the players to look over their shoulder when the ball is being drilled into them so that they are learning how to scan for space and other players whilst also giving them less time to react to the movement of the ball. A condition I will add halfway through the drill is that the players have to control it with their weaker foot so that their first touch is strong on both feet. Finally, a target I would introduce is that every successful first touch counts as a point and one on the weak foot counts as two to make a competition between the two teams.

This drill is a one on one drill where the defending player will play it into the attacker and then it will become a on on one where the attacker has to try to score against the goalkeeper whilst the defender has to try to win the ball.

Adaptations (Progressions & Regressions): A progression for this drill is that I would bring in two defenders and two attackers to make it a two on two so then the defensive players have to learn how to defend in a pivot whilst attacking players have to learn how to work off of each other. A regression for this for this drill is that I would make it so that the defenders have a  2 second delay before they can try to win the ball so that it is easier for the attacking players to score

Challenges, Conditions or Targets: I would challenge the attacking players to try to beat the defenders before scoring so that this develops ball control and confidence when faced with opposition. A condition I would ad is that the players cannot go outside of the 18-yard box so that there is a focus on tight control dribbling and facing the defender. Each time a team scores it will add a point onto their tally for the session to create a target and an incentive.

Finally, I will finish on a game between the two teams where I will encourage the players to try to beat a man and keep the ball on the ground to exemplify the focus of the session, to develop the players' first touch and to take on a man and try to score.

Adaptations (Progressions & Regressions): A progression for this exercise is that I will make a player neutral who will play for whoever is defending so that it is harder for the attacking team to take on a man and score. A regression for this game is that I would make the neutral player play for the attacking team so that there are more attacking players so that it is easier to create attacking moves and will mean more success when beating defenders. This idea is strengthened by the views of Lucas Emetto et al. (2018)  "One study showed that the team with numerical superiority performed more defensive tactical behaviours, and the team with numerical inferiority performed a greater number of penetrations of the defensive line or movements of the player with the ball towards the goal area."

Challenges, Conditions or Targets: I will give each players different challenges throughout the game that are related to the focus of the session such as, you have to beat a man before you can shoot, so that the objectives of the session are being developed and the players can learn how to discover what the opposition team are playing and how to work against it to beat it. I would add a condition that increases the pitch size which means that there is more space for the attackers to run at the defenders.
