Adaptations (Progressions & Regressions):

6v6 Zone possession practice,

In this example, the ball is always started with the red team from the coach,

They must keep the ball, using the 4v4 inside the inside zone, and the two outside players who can be pressed by the blue team,

10 passes equals a goal,

The blue team must try to win the ball and transition through a dribble through one of the four gates, this equals a goal,

Once the blue team wins the ball, all zone restrictions are lifted,

Switch the teams over to change the stimulus,

6x2 minute practice with 1 minute in-between for concurrent and walkthrough intervention,

MD-4 or -3 lead in,

30x20m with 8m runoff to the outer rectangle,

Coaching Points;

Pick when to play inside or outside the zone,

Use touches outside the box to attract pressure,

Third man combinations inside the box if we have a spare man,

Immediate counter press to contain transition or win the ball back quickly to reset.

Reaction to Transition

Reaction to Transition
Function
This practice begins with a 4v1 rondo taking place inside the central circle of the pitch.

Once the single Blue defender wins the ball, they attempt to pass it to one of their teammates positioned outside the circle. This marks the beginning of the practice’s second phase: a 5v4 (excluding goalkeepers) that takes place over the entire playing area.

After losing possession in the circle, the four Red players must transition quickly and attempt to regain the ball from the five Blue players, who aim to retain possession.

If the Blue team completes 10 passes, it counts as a goal.

If the Reds regain possession, their objective is to score in either of the full-sized goals.

Blue is allowed to link with the two players GK and target, creating a 7v4 overload.

Initially, Red players are not permitted to press either goalkeeper when the ball is in the end zone. As the session progresses, they should be allowed to do so.

The coach should be positioned at halfway and serve balls to either team as appropriate.

Defensive Transition Coaching Points

Closing The Net: Once the team in possession (Blue) loses the ball, they must react quickly to "close the net."

This means reducing space for the Reds immediately after the turnover to prevent them from creating finishing opportunities.

Out Of Possession Coaching Points

Aggressive Pressing: The four Red pressing players should work together, pressing aggressively to cut passing lanes and regain possession.

The first pressing player must set the tone by communicating clearly and initiating the press.

Identify The Pressing Triggers: Red players should look for pressing triggers in the opponent’s play—these might include slow passes, poor touches, aerial balls, or the first forward pass from a goalkeeper.

6v3 Transition

6v3 Transition
Function
This is a two-half possession/transition game in which the playing area is split into two halves.

Divide the players into equal teams.

Play starts with the coach serving a ball to either team. At this trigger, the team out of possession sends three players into the opponents’ half, creating a 6v3 overload for one team in one half of the pitch.

The team in possession (Red) aims to complete a set number of passes to score a point.

The out-of-possession team (Blue) sends three pressing players who attempt to win the ball and score in one of the two mini-goals ahead of them.

Alternatively, the Blue players can turn and pass to their inactive teammates in the opposite half of the playing area.

If Blue achieves either objective, a transition is initiated and the setup is reversed in the opposite half.

If the ball goes out of play, the coach (C) serves a ball to the inactive players in the opposite half.

Progression / Variation

Introduce a neutral player who supports the team in possession in either half, if necessary.

Remove goals: teams attempt to force an error or win possession and play to their inactive teammates instead.

Coaching Points

Quick Reactions: Apply pressure to stop forward momentum as quickly as possible.

Press: Can we win the ball back within six seconds or three passes?

Final Game (35 mins)

Exercise 3: Scrimmage (With Build-Up Condition)

Organisation:

  • Standard scrimmage format (e.g., 7v7 or 8v8 depending on numbers)

  • Use one or two neutral CMs if numbers are uneven

Condition:

  • Every kick-off or restart begins with the goalkeeper in possession

    • This applies after goals, balls out of play, or restarts — teams must build out from the back

Purpose:

  • Reinforces build-up play under pressure

  • Encourages players to drop, support, and play through the thirds rather than bypassing

Key Coaching Points:

  • GK distribution and first touch under pressure

  • Defender movement to create passing options

  • Central players checking in to support and connect

  • Team shape and spacing during build-out
