Activity 2 - Protect, turn or get tagged
All players will pair up, each with a soccer ball. One player dribbles ball, their objective is to protect the ball and to understand how and when to turn away from the defender. The defender has the ball in their hands, their objective is to throw their ball at their partners ball to gain a point.
How can all players be successful in this exercise?
- Demonstrate to all defenders what sort of body position do they need to have = Jockey position; guiding the attacker into a corner or to a side.
Progressions
4 reps @ 45 seconds - Let both players have the opportunity to be a bandit and an attacker [Re-ittirate all technical coaching points for the bandit and the attacker]
2 reps @ 45 seconds - No pairs. Attackers are by themselves. Where is a good place for the attacker to stand? And, what/who do they need to be able to see at all times. [Swap bandits and attackers every round]
Coaching Points
- How can the attackers find out where their/the bandits are?
- How does a defender stand? Side on, low stance, 45 degree angle
- Where do the bandits want to show the attackers?
- Attackers what are you trying to protect?
- Attackers, what part of your body are you trying to show the bandit.
- Where do the attackers need to stand.

Activity 3 - Protect, turn or get tagged in pairs
Players pass in pairs whilst a bandit tries to throw the ball at the soccer ball. Now, the attacker with the ball has 2 options. (1) to protect the ball when under pressure (2) Use the parents/support player if they are there.
This is going to be much harder as now the focus is on the passing in pairs, so limit the number of bandits. When the bandit has thrown the ball, they must then go and find another pair.
Coaching Points
- What is the defensive jockey position?
- What are the 2 options for the player with the ball?
- If the bandit comes in to throw the ball, what can you do to protect the ball?
- What can you communicate to the attacking player?
- Technical coaching - Correct passing, good control, good distance apart, correct tempo on the pass.
- Where does the player without the ball support from?
- Where do you move into when you have passed the ball?
Progressions
6 reps total at 45 seconds each
4 Reps at 45 seconds - Stay in working pairs but change pairs after 2 reps.
2 Reps - No more pairs but players are encouraged to move the ball and to help out the player with the ball.

See the guidance at the top of this page to understand why you are not seeing interactive Football/Soccer images.
Place the players in either a triangle formation if there are 3 of them or into a diamond formation when they are in 4s.
Remind them to keep their positions and go over the points of the session.

Organising Activity - 4 Surfaces (10 mins)
Organising Activity - 4 Surfaces
Each player has a soccer ball at their feet and stand on one side of the square. They must use all 4 sides of their foot before returning to any side apart from the side that they started at. Can the players try and do a turn when they reach the outside. It is very important to show these players a good demonstration of using the laces, inside, outside and sole, encourage them to take lots of touches.
Progressions
6 reps @ 45 seconds.
2 reps - You can move to any side after you have dribbled with the ball and used all 4 parts of your foot. USING BOTH FEET
2 reps - Ask the players the coaching points. Type of space, type of speed? Where should we be moving into? USING BOTH FEET
2 reps - Use weak foot only.
Coaching Points
- What 4 parts of the foot can we use?
- Where do we look when we are dribbling?
- What type of touches do we take in tight areas? What type of speed?
- What type of touches do we take in open areas? What type of speed?
- Correct any technical in-proficiencies
