Description


The focus of this session is to develop a players technical ability with passing and receiving.


COACHING POINTS & OUTCOMES

  • We want players to practice their ability to pass with the inside of both of their feet with firm passes for good ball speed.
  • We want them to pass to and receive on their back foot (foot furthest from where the ball is coming from)

Handball Game (10 mins)

Handball Game




Set Up

  • Area set up 20 by 20; slightly bigger or smaller depending on age of player and number of players.
  • Mini goal at each end.
  • Players to split into two even teams.

Objective


  • Players use their hands only and are looking to move the ball around area and maintain possession.
  • Players can only use two handed chest passes, all passes must be below head height.
  • Players when receiving must stop still (like in netball) and they can only hold the ball for 3-5 seconds (depending on age) before having to pass.
  • 5 passes = 1 point
  • If a player drops the ball it is a turnover.
  • Opponents can only intercept passes.


Coaching Points


  • Looking for players to take up supporting positions to the player in possession.
  • Create space across the whole area - spread out, make the area big.

Passing Squares (15 mins)

Passing Square


Set Up

  • Area set up 5m by 5m; slightly bigger or smaller depending on age of player.
  • Goal about 10m away.
  • Groups of 4 - set up the amount of squares you need to ensure this.
  • One player per corner.

Objective


  • Players are looking to move the ball around the OUTSIDE of the square.
  • Players stay on their corner after passing.


Coaching Points


  • Players to pass to and receive on furthest foot from the direction the ball has been passed from (back foot)
  • Using the inside of the foot to receive and pass,
  • Encourage players to allow enough space between them and the pole, positioned so they can see both the player passing to them and where they will pass to.



  • Change directions after a certain amount of sets to work both sides of the body.
  • After one or two sets to practice - if players appear to have the hang of it; turn it into a competition of who can be the quickest group to complete 5 laps gets to go shoot at the goal.

 Players make a movement towards the player with the ball, then second movement back around the marker/pole to receive on other side.


Pass goes in front of pole this time.

Base Rondo (15 mins)

Base Rondo



Set Up

  • Area set up 5 by 5; slightly bigger or smaller depending on age of player.
  • A goal about 10 metres away.
  • Four players per square, positioned on the side of the squares .

*Can use same area as the previous passing practice.


Objective


  • Players are looking to move the ball around the square similar to a rondo.
  • The players must look to move the ball in one direction.
  • After a team makes 10 consecutive passes with no mistakes, they can go and shoot in the goal for a point.


  • Change directions every couple of sets to work both sides of the body.

PROGRESSION
  • To add some decision making - on the coaches call the players have to change directions.



Coaching Points
  • Players to pass to and receive on the inside of furthest foot from the direction the ball has been passed from (back foot) and then look to play with the inside of the other foot - playing with both feet.
  • Try to play in two touches.

  • Players split into a 3v3 or 4v4 depending on numbers.
  • Players in a triangle and diamond shape

Objective


  • Normal game rules.
  • If a team scores, they restart at their defensive end.


Coaching Points




  • Observing for attempted passing and receiving.
  • Who is receiving on which feet; i.e furthest foot OR playing with both feet.
  • Encourage players to spread out.
