Team Training - Playing Out From the Back (Defensive Third into Middle Third) - In Possession (18 players / 25 minutes)

Description

  • 9v9
  • Blues formation 1-4-4-2 (diamond) with the two forwards removed
  • Reds formation 1-4-3-3 with the two full-backs removed
  • Blues playing up the pitch towards the full-sized goal and two mini goals/mannequins
  • Reds playing down the pitch towards the full size goal

Pitch

  • 2/3 pitch with tapered lines towards the halfway line (as shown)
  • Flat discs used to create the five lanes
  • Two mini goals (angled) and two mannequins on the tapered lines to represent the two blue forwards who have been removed
  • Footballs placed in both goals and halfway for varied restarting positions

Considerations

  • Tapering session - MD-2
  • 3x6 minute blocks with 2 minute break periods between
  • Concurrent feedback during the blocks and terminal feedback feedback during the rest periods using walkthroughs/tactics board
  • Coaching process utilised when required

Coaching Detail (Blues)
  • Pass detail to play forward to break lines
  • Can we play through, around or over?
  • Rotations of the diamond to create space
  • Use of the five lanes
Coaching Detail (Reds)
  • Press high or mid-block?
  • Can they score as quick as possible? Potential time limits
  • Maintain realism out of possession - centre backs to use halfway line as a reference point

Block One

Prior to block one I will frame the session to the players using a tactics board briefly and ask the players to go and stand in their positions on the pitch (bibs will be laid out in the positions in advance) and provide a walkthrough.

Block One (6mins)

Problem: Reds high pressing aggressively using their front three

Solution: Blue centre backs be brave in possession, the deepest midfielder follows the line of the press, the wider players of the diamond are to play on the outside shoulders of the opposition central midfield players and to start high to then create space to move back into. Trying to play into these players to either drop the ball back into the 6 to switch or the same side full-back.

Red Detail

  • Press aggressively with the front 3 narrow
  • When they win the ball back can they score as quickly as possible - potential time limit

Block Two (6mins)

Problem: Reds drop into a midblock, the striker marks the blue 6 and the wingers play deeper stopping any passes into the fullbacks

Solution: False fullback using the wider of the diamond midfield

Coaching Detail (Blues)

  • Ball-speed of the square pass from centre-back to centre-back
  • Triggers for the opposite fullback and wider blue player to rotate
  • Fullback goes to play on the highest line / midfield player moves wide and plays behind the opposition from line
Coaching Detail (Reds)

  • Narrow front three in the midblock
  • Remaining players mark player for player
  • Score as quickly as possible when winning the ball back

Block Two (solution 2)

Second solution: invite the press from wider of the front three to play through or around.

Detail regarding the wider red player: if they jump to the winger, it allows the blues to play inside, but if they jump to

Block Three (6mins)

Reds will have the option to press aggressively or drop into the midblock and it is up to the blues to find the solution to play out. This will be coached throughout and the four solutions will be reminded to the players.

  • Use of lanes to identify movement patterns/triggers
  • Removal of mini goals/mannequins if required (2 goals for the main goal and 1 for the mannequin/mini goal
