Learning Team (Blue) Formation: 1-2-4-2

Who: #1, #2, #3, #11, #8, #6, #7

What: Improve build out play when winning the ball in the defensive half

Where: Defensive Half

When: As soon as we win the ball in the defensive half

Why: So we can transition and get into the attacking half

Coaching Points: As soon as we win the ball in the defensive half can we spread out and create passing lanes in order for us to build up and get the ball into the attacking half.

Orientation Team TTPs: Pressure the ball immediately after losing it, using players closest to the situation. Get organized and balanced as quickly as possible.

Learning Team TTPs: Spread out, Create Passing lines, Keep the ball when you can't go forward.

Warm UP

Warm-Up Phase (20 Minutes)

In this stage of the practice, we have players in 2v2 rondos. In the rondos, there are 2 neutral target players who will play with whatever team is in possession. There is also a neutral player in the middle of the grid. The goal of the rondos is to work the ball from the target player to the other target player. The team in possession is effectively in a 5v2 and should be looking to find the free player on the field.

During the warmup phase, we want to encourage the importance of hitting the target player who represents passing the ball back to the goalie. As the ball hits the target player can the 2 blues work their way down, get spread out, and open their hips up in order to play forward again back to the other target player?

Dimensions: 15x15

Duration: 20 Minutes ( 3x6 minute sets)  Jump in during each break to deliever coaching moments.

Orientation Phase

Orientation Phase (20 minutes of however long it takes to bring out the problem)

The reds have a #6 #7 #11 #10 #9

The Blues have a #1 #2 #3 #6 #7 #11 #10

In this stage, we are working with the red team the orientation team. The red team will start the game looking to attack the big goal. When the reds lose the ball in the attacking phase is when we want them to begin their press. They are looking to pressure the ball immediately and whoever is closest to the ball should immediately pressure the player on the ball. See in the diagram how when the Blue #6 wins the ball the reds are pressuring from all angles to get compact and cut off passing lines. When the reds regain possession they should be looking to attack at goal right away.

Coaching Moments: In this phase of the practice, we want to bring out the problem so we will be coaching over the top and doing individual references when needed.

Address how pressing to regain the ball high up the field is a great opportunity for us to sustain attacks and create goal-scoring chances. The best opportunity to win the ball is as soon as you lose it since the other team isn't organized in possesion yet.

Time: 20 Mins (9 min x 2 sets) 1 min break to deliver coaching and send for water.

Dimensions: 35x40.

Learning Phase

Learning Phase (30 minutes)

The reds have a #6 #7 #11 #10 #9

The Blues have a #1 #2 #3 #6 #7 #11 #10

In this stage, we are working with the blue team the learning team after having brought out the problem of not being able to build up after winning the ball. When the blues win the ball after defending they should look to spread out quickly, create passing lines, and keep hold of the ball when they can't go forward. (See diagram when the #6 of Blue wins the ball) The blues should look to pass out of pressure by using the #1. When the goalie has the ball can the #2 and #3 quickly open their hips and spread out so we can play forward? Can the #7 and #11 spread out and create width for the team in possession?

Coaching Moments: In this phase of the practice, show stop freezes and paint-the-picture moments to give the players an idea of how we can keep hold of the ball and create passing when we win in our own defensive half.

Address the importance of not losing the ball as soon as we get it as we will be in the process of spreading out and will be in danger of being spread out if the other team wins the ball.

Progression: If the Blues are able to build out effectively after winning the ball add a second striker and play a 2-4-2 with the reds.

Player actions:

Use the #1 as an extra player in possession and look to play back to them if we can't go forward.

The #2 and #3 need to quickly sprint back while opening their hips to create passing options for the goalie.

The #7 and #11 need to spread out when possession is one to create width for the team

Time: 30 Mins (9 min x 3 sets) 1 min break to deliver coaching and send for water.

Dimensions: 35x40.

Implementation Phase

Implementation Phase 20 Minutes

In the implementation phase, we are looking to see if either can team do what we have worked on in the learning phase in a game. When they win the ball back in their own defensive half can they keep hold of the ball, spread out and create passing lines in order to progress the ball into the attacking half?

Duration: 20 Minutes (9.5x2) Gives the teams a chance to get a drink and switch sides like a game.
