Train the Goalkeeper
Goalkeeper warm-up
For approximately 10 minutes, a trainer or coach will warm the keeper up with a series of low, medium, and high throws and kicks. As the warm-up session advanced, the throws will turn into kicks, and the kicks will progress from average to hard in velocity and strength. As the kicks grow faster and harder, the trainer will move back to a reasonable distance. The keeper will also complete a series of 10 to 15 goal kicks.

Train the Goalkeeper
Goalkeeper movement and recovery on the posts
2 trainers or coaches will place themselves near the corner of the goalie box just inside the 18 yard line each at an opposite corner. Each trainer will have 10 balls. One side will go first sending a near post shot at the goalkeeper. Shots should be on target and within reach of the keeper. Immediately after the keeper either saves the shot, or it goes by him/her, he/she should move to the other goalpost. The other ball will be sent as soon as the keeper arrives near the post. This will continue until all 20 balls have been shot. The keeper will take a short rest, then complete the drill a second time.

Train the Goalkeeper
Goalkeeper low shot movement and recovery
After lining up 16 to 18 balls just outside the 6 yards line, 2 coaches will alternate taking shots on the keeper. Each shot will be taken when the keeper is recovered from the previous shot and set. Shots should be low and hard. The keeper should have to come low and possibly all the way to the ground to make saves. Shooters should move very quickly and also make sure they keeper can reach their shots. This will help work on the keeper’s reaction and his/her low movement. This is NOT a shooting drill; this is a keeper drill.

Train the Goalkeeper
Goalkeeper movement, shot saving, and recovery
A coach will set up with 15 to 20 balls near the penalty spot. The keeper will set up in a prone position with his head toward the goal, perpendicular to the goal line. The coach will send a series of shots towards the keeper at a fast tempo. Following each shot, the keeper will quickly return to the prone position. Just before the coach strikes the ball, he will blow a whistle. This will release the keeper allowing him/her to come to a ready position in anticipation for the shot. The shots should be within the keeper’s reach and savable. This drill will help build agility and quick movements allowing for better recovery.
