Drill: Defending

Progression 1
Organisation
2 Blue Players, one white player.
Area = 30 x 10 yards.
Aim
Blue Player 1 passes the ball to Blue Player 2 who attempts to dribble the ball over the end zone ahead of him.
Coaching Points
As soon as Blue Player 1 passes the ball, white defender seeks to close Blue Player 2 down. If the White Defender can get to the ball first before Blue Player 2, great. If not, White defender needs to try to block the advance of Blue Player 2. Can he stop him turning? 'Quick, slow, sideways, low'.
Sidways - 45 degrees - dictate direction to Blue Player 2 - can he force him out of the area? - Touch tight, but no closer otherwise he won't be able to see the ball.
React to the movement of the ball not the player - needs to be able to see the ball.
Patience is the key.
Don't commit to a tackle you can't win. Don't dive in, or turn your back, or go to ground.
Force the attacker to think - can he make a move to tackle or feint? Try to unbalance the attacker to force him to do something he doesn't want to. Keeping the attacker occupied means his attention isn't focussed on looking around to pass the ball to a team mate.

Drill
Organisation
Create an area 30 x 10 yards.
Aim
Blue Attacker starts with the ball and dribbles towards the mini goal. As the Attacker progresses, two White Defenders endeavour to defend against him. If White Attackers gain possession, they must try to dribble ball between coned goal. Blue player is tasked with trying to score in the mini goal. Players swap over after each turn.
Coaching Points
Communication betweeen the two Defenders is key. One Defender must act as Frist Defender - 'Quick, Slow, Sideways, Low' - aim to get within touching distance of Blue Attacker and press. Which way is he trying to force Attacker? Away from the danger area - the goal - out to the wings.
Second Defender supports - at an angle - goalside of First Defender. If Attacker manages to get past First Defender, Second Defender presses as above. First Defender seeks to make reccovery run, places himself on a line between the goal and the Attacker, and at a goalside angle a short distance from the First Defender.
Gap between First and Second Defender must not be more than 5-6 yards.
Delay- allow your team to get back into shape
Deny- Space/Time/Place to shoot
Deflect- be brave, block the ball
Defend- Tackle, win the ball back

2 Defenders v 2 Attackers
Organisation
Create an area 20 x 10 yards
Split players into 3 blue players and 2 white players.
Place a blue player in the middle of the end line, and place the 2 blue players one on each side approx 10 yards infield.
Place the 2 white defenders in each corner of the opposite end line.
Aim
Blue player on end zone starts by passing the ball to either of the two infield blue players, and then moves forward to create a 2v2. Blue players then seek to dribble the ball over the opposite end line. White defenders try to stop them by either tackling them or forcing the ball out of the area.
Instructions
White defenders must seek to close down the blue player as soon as the ball is passed to one of the infield players.
Can they nick it? Or otherwise stop the blue player turning?
The first defender - closest defender should close down initially.
The second defender should be behind the first defender and at an angle across from him - no more than 6-7 yards.
Coaching Points
The second defender has a better position to view than the first defender - he should shout precise information and encouragement to the first defender:
'go tight'
'wait'
'patience'
'show inside'
'show outside'
What if the attacker gets past the first defender?
First defender must make a recovery run and support second defender who now moves forward to pressure the attacker.

Drill
Organisation
Split players into two teams - blue and whites - 3 or 4 in each team.
Create an area 30 x 10 yards.
Play to commence from white players. Players take it in turns to take on the role of either attacker or defender - following their exercise the player joins the opposite team to play the role of the other player.
Aim
1) Defender passes ball into attacker
2) Defender then follows that pass quickly and applies pressure to the attacker within the coned area.
3) When attacker receives the ball he should aim to get past the defender, and once out of the coned area, pass the ball to the waiting defenders. Defender can only dispossess the Attacker within the coned area. Defender succeeds if he dispossess Attacker or forces the Attacker outside the area.
Coaching Points
'Quick, Slow, Sideways, Low'.
Be quick to stop the attacker making ground, slow up once near the Attacker, side on, on toes, knees bent, feet apart (not too far), weight on back foot, arms length away from attacker, leaning slightly forward over toes.
