SSG - Passing out from the back (30 mins)

Key Factors

  • The defensive team must play out from the back and score through the two end gates
  • The attacking team get 1 point by gaining possession from the defensive team, and an extra for scoring
  • They must keep their team shape at all time as if it were a real game, and retain focus on creating and utilising space

Organisation

  • Every time the ball goes dead it restarts from the keeper.
  • The player ratio should resemble a real game, i.e 4 at the back with 2 strikers etc.
  • Just under a half is optimum for this drill, but the same principles can be utilised in a smaller space if necessary

Progressions/Regressions

  • To make the passing out from the back more difficult, more attackers can be added
  • To make it easier, the gates can be removed and the defenders only have to take the ball over the half way line.
  • Open up to free play, where the ball starts from where it goes out as it would in a game. It is important to carry the principles of playing out through to different scenarios such as defensive throw-ins and possession turn overs.
Coaching Points
  • Making little movements to create angles for our team mates
  • If the attacking team latch on to the short pass and start pressing higher and higher (they normally naturally do this during this drill), discuss at what point should we miss out the first man and go straight to the midfield
  • Do not be afraid to go backwards to enable a forwards pass next
  • How can we create space for each other as well as for ourselves?
