Organisation

-Area size suitable to the needs and ability of the GKs. Space must be provided for 2 working areas with a view to combining the two later on during the session.

-Equipment- 2 goals (suitable to the age of the GKs), 12 cones - 4x red, 4x blue and 4x white . Supply of footballs.

-Area set-up as shown: 2 goals opposite each other (sufficient amount of space provided between each goal). White cones divide areas up (forming a half-way line). 4x red and 4x blue cones positioned as shown - in order to provide service from the byline and deeper positions.

-8-10 GKs can be involved in the session.

This session can be used further on down the line in to the season when the GKs have undergone an introduction in to developing their high-ball technique.

Important elements within and to take from the session:

-Catch at GKs highest point

-Use of appropriate leg (cross from the right; drive left leg up and vice versa).

-Positioning in relation to the ball.

-Transfer from the session in to the GKs respective games by building confidence through technique.

1) Technical

Key Factors

Technical

-Assess the flight of the ball.

-Appropriate footwork to the ball.

-Attack the ball as far forward as possible.

-Take off on inside leg.

-Outside leg comes up in bent position (elevation and protection).

-Arms reached out - slightly bent.

-Head looking up at the ball.

-Catch the ball at the highest point possible - W handling shape.

Tactical - starting positioning in the goal in relation to the ball. How does your starting position change in relation to the area of the ball?

Psychological - confidence (developing technical elements),

How it works:

-2x set-ups as previously stated. 4 GKs in each set-up; 2 GKs (1 working at a time, the other GK will rest), 2x servers - 1x on each side covering 2 cones each.

-GKs will cover both byline and deep crosses. Working for 4 serves each before rotating (GK1 rests and GK2 takes over) and undergo 2 reps. Working GKs will then become servers for the current servers to take their places.

Service: underarm/overarm throws.

progression or variation of service will be from feet.

Key Factors

Tactical - starting position in the goal in relation to the ball. How does your starting position change in relation to the area of the ball?

Psychological - confidence (transfering the technical elements in to a skill practice), decision-making - attempt to gather the cross or re-set. Bravery against GK2 to claim ball under pressure.

How it works:

-Exactly the same set-up as the previous slide.

-The progression for this exercise is to incorporate GK2 in to the exercise in order to provide passive pressure for GK1, in order to provide a distraction and obstruct him when aiming to claim the ball in the air.

-Same amount of serves and reps before GKs become servers and the servers become GKs.

Service: Servers can provide service from hands (underarm/overarm throws) or progress by providing service from feet (meeting needs of players).

3) Shot-Stopping Variation

Key Factors

-Technical elements of the high-ball technique.

-The GKs role in attacking transitions (distribution).

-Shot-stopping techniques.

-Competitiveness to end the session.

-Social - working as a team.

How it works:

-Area size will remain the same; combine both groups in order to create one group.

-Server 1 serves the ball in to the GK - if GK catches the ball successfully, he will then distribute the ball over to server 2 on the opposite side (underarm roll/overarm throw).

-Server 2 will run on to the ball; control it and play the ball centrally in to GK2.

-GK2 controls the ball and then has a shot against the GK on the opposing side.

-If GK punches the ball - opposing team can have a shot at goal; this allows the GK to focus on his recovery.

-2 serves each, then GKs rotate. After 4 reps GKs become servers and servers become GKs.

Points system: 2 points for a successful catch; 1 point for a punch, 1 point for a goal.

Progression(s)/Variation(s):

-Servers can have a shot at goal vs the opposing GK (angled shot-stopping).

-Rebounds
