Animation 1

Setup

  • Playing area: 60x40 yard pitch (narrow half-field)
  • 3 teams of 5 players each (yellow, Blue and red teams visible in image)
  • Full-size goals at each end with goalkeepers
  • Yellow cones marking the sidelines
  • Red poles/flags positioned at each corner of the playing area

Activity

  • Two teams compete while the third team waits
  • Resting team's players must distribute themselves at each end of the field to create potential overloads
  • Teams play until one scores or until 4 minutes elapse
  • First team to score wins and regains the ball to attack in the opposite direction
  • The losing team leaves the pitch and is replaced by the waiting team
  • If no goals are scored after 4 minutes, the team that won the previous game stays on
  • The game NEVER stops - continuous play with quick transitions
  • When playing without goalkeepers, players must be inside the end zone to score

Progression 1: Time Constraints

  • Introduce specific time windows for counter-attacking actions:
    • Teams have 15 seconds to shoot once they gain possession
    • Visual countdown from coach or use of timer for clarity
    • If no shot is taken within time limit, possession transfers to defending team
  • Gradually reduce the time window as session progresses (15→12→10 seconds)
  • Encourages direct play and quick decision-making
  • Develops players' internal timing clock for counter-attacking situations
  • Simulates the reality of counter-attacks where advantage diminishes as time passes

Progression 2: Bonus Points System

  • Implement a scoring system that rewards quick counter-attacking:
    • Normal goal = 1 point
    • Goal scored within 10 seconds of gaining possession = 2 points
    • Double points (2 or 4 points) if defensive team regains possession and scores within 30 seconds
  • Keep visible score to increase competitive element
  • Rewards both effective counter-attacking and counter-pressing
  • Encourages quick recovery and transition when possession is lost
  • Develops recognition of transition moments as critical scoring opportunities

Progression 3: Offside Rule Implementation

  • Introduce offside rule to add tactical complexity:
    • Standard offside rule applies (players behind last defender when ball is played)
    • Assistant coaches or waiting players act as linesmen
    • Can be modified to use half-pitch offside line initially if needed
  • Forces more sophisticated movement patterns and timing of runs
  • Prevents simple long-ball counter-attacks and encourages coordinated movement
  • Develops awareness of defensive line positioning when defending transitions
  • Adds realism and prepares players for match conditions
  • Can be adjusted based on age/ability (e.g., offside only in final third for younger players).
