Warm Up Race (10 mins)

RACE!

In groups of 3 or 4 (no more as players must keep warm and not stand around/queue)

Focus: Carrying then Passing and Receiving

Each team has 7 balls

Aim is for each player to carry ball to 10m mark, leave ball there and race back team

Once all 7 balls are at the 10m cone, player runs to ball and must pass it back to their team then run back to team

Once ball is back with team and stopped dead, next player may repeat (other teammates can assist with the stopping)

Then teams need to repeat same exercise to the 15m mark

1-1 Decathlon - Game with four goals (15 mins)

  • Game in pairs to get everyone moving and warmed up with stick and ball.
  • The aim of the game is to score a goal by controlling the ball in one of the two wide goals set up to their left (or right) and at the opposite end.
  • The player without the ball defends their two goals: one goal behind them and another to their right (or left).
  • The attacker starts the game.
  • The defender in the opposite goal reacts, leaves their goal and tries to prevent the attacker from scoring in either of the two goals assigned to them.
  • When the ball goes off the field or when a goal is score, the game restarts and the players change roles.
  • If there is a foul by one player, the other player is awarded a free self pass with the defender at a distance of 5m.
  • The winner is the player who scores the most goals in 3 mins.
  • Swap players around so that they face different opponents.
OBJECTIVES
  • While dribbling the ball, look up to be bale to observe and analyse the opponent's position and play.
  • Learn not to dribble the ball into the reach of a defender.
  • By dribbling the ball to one side, force the defender to move into that direction and then enter the space created with a sudden change of speed and direction.
  • Improve the technique of changing speed and direction with the ball.
  • As defenders, learn to force the attacker to dribble the ball into the desired space.

Continuous 3v2 Start 50% (15 mins)

How it works:

  • 3 attack goal against 2 defenders until they score, the ball goes off or the defenders outlet to their team
  • Once defenders outlet player receiving outlet joins and the previous attackers are out
  • One defender from each side joins

Looking for:

  • Attackers: Get ahead, don't slow the game down if the option is there
  • Defenders: Protect good shooting angles, force the ball wide, scramble defence (slow the game down)
  • Defenders: Point (point at where the threat is), name (call someone to address threat),, action (tell them in two words what to do)

6v3 Overload at Goal (15 mins)

Description:

  • Quarter pitch split into thirds. With a goal at one end.
  • Two attackers start in each quarter. One defender starts in each quarter.
  • An attacker in first quarter plays uncontested pass to fellow attacker who is standing next to defender. The ball is passed straight back.
  • From this point all players in drill are live and can go anywhere in quarter. It is a 6v3 at goal.
  • If defenders win the ball they must dribble it over one of the sidelines. At this point attackers must try and win the ball back, if they do they continue to attack.
  • All fouls are blown up, with the game stopped and free hits played.
  • If the ball goes out or a goal is scored, the exercise is finished. At this point each attacking pair moves up a third, with pair at top coming back to start. Defenders do sets of three then swap out.

Coaching points:

  • STAY OUTSIDE DEFENDER'S REACH: When offering a pass make sure you stay outside the reach of defender. WHY? So the ball won't be intercepted.
  • Move outside reach of stick and create a passing angle.

What does good look like?

  • Players stay outside reach of defender when offering a pass.
