SWITCHING THE PLAY

Switching the Play - Specific

In Possession

The session will be focusing on switching the play into the attacking thirds and exploiting space out wide for our 2x wingers to either deliver crosses into the box or create shooting opportunities for themselves if possible

  • As the focus is to switch the play into the attacking third I have removed the 2x FB's on the blue team who are in possession

Out of Possession

Team out of possession will try to defend and stop the opposing team scoring in the goals

The team out of possession will be playing in a 1-3-5--2 but I have removed the 2x wide midfielders so the shape will be a 1-3-3-2

Pitch Layout:

  • The session will take part on half of the pitch and I have divided the pitch into thirds.
  • Within those thirds I would challenge the wingers to create as much width as possible to try and pull the defensive unit out of their structure.
  • When the ball is in the wide areas I would challenge the winger to attack the opponent in 1v1 or look to create combination with supporting CM
  • 2x mini goals on the half way line for the opponents to score in

Block 1

  • First block I will focus on switching the ball through the 2x CB who would like to pass into the highest/widest player in either of the 2x wide thirds
  • Once the winger has the ball in either of these areas they will look to attack the space in front of them or take on the opponent in a 1v1
  • In this block only 1x defender will be able to engage in the wide zone against the attacker

Block 2

  • Second block I will ask the number 6 to receive the ball on the half turn to switch the ball
  • I will ask the number 6 to create angles off from the CB so that they can play through centrally then release the opposite side either to the opposite CB or straight into the winger

Block 3

  • Last block I will now look to utilise the GK on the switch
  • Last block would be free play on allowing the in possession to create solutions on transferring the ball from one side to the other as quick as possible
Challenges
  • Challenge for the blue team to score from a cross directly from the winger
  • Reds must score in the goals within 10 seconds
Conditions

  • 2x wingers must occupy the wide zones
  • Only 1x defender can engage in the wide zone for block 1

Targets

  • Reds must score in the 2x mini goals
  • Blues must score in the goal

SWITCHING THE PALY

Switching the Play  SSG

Pitch Dimensions: Half pitch

Player Numbers: 18 players inc GK (9v9)

Equipment: 2x goals, footballs spaced out around the outside of the pitch

In Possession Final Third

  • The blue team will be attacking in a 1-4-3-3 shape against a 1-2-3-3
  • When attacking the team are in possession they will look to switch the play quickly to disrupt the defensive unit/structure to create opportunities to cross/shoot or be aggressive in 1v1 situations
Problems for Attacking team
  • Problems for the attacking team could be if the out of possession team press their CB's who are key for build up
  • If this were to happen I would challenge the GK to play to the wide player as quick as possible skipping any build up play if they have space to exploit
  • Another problem could be if they compact the pitch centrally - though we would be able to switch the ball more freely there may not be success in creating opportunities to score
  • If this was to happen I would ask the CB to come wider to draw space in the middle and if they still remain compact then create a 2v1 situation in the wide zone
  • If the CB steps forward I would also ask the number 6 to get behind the ball to recycle possession or stop any counter attacks and not leaving our last CB isolated

Technical Detail for Attackers

  • Consider ball speed when switching the play
  • Body shape to look to play forward
  • Create space by being wide
  • Variation of passes - diagonal, long or short

Tactical Detail for Attackers

  • Angles off the ball to receive
  • Create width and depth from wide players & ST
  • Recognise space to play into or move into
  • Be patient in build up

Challenges

  • When defending team win possession can they score directly off the counter
  • In possession can the 2 wide midfielders be as wide as possible
  • Can the CB be behind the ball at all times to support for a switch of play
Conditions
  • Half a pitch is the playing area
Targets
  • Defending team must score in opposing goal
Restarts
  • Game will restart either with GK or throw ins. Balls are dotted around the pitch for quick restarts to hopefully create more overloads

Blocks

  • The session will be split into 3x blocks
  • Block 1 - CB or GK find the wide players quickly
  • Block 2 - I would ask the CM players to drop deeper to help with the build up of possession then switch through midfield
  • Block 3 - Free play
Interventions
  • I would use terminal interventions to get the players understand how we may create different variations to create scoring/shooting chances - the use of visual aides with the tactics board would be used
  • I would also use walk through for coaching points alongside concurrent feedback whilst the ball is in play
