Bowl Build Out

Bowl Shape Build-Out Pattern (7v7)

Team in Possession (Red):

  • GK – Goalkeeper
  • 5 (RCB) – Right-sided Centre Back
  • 4 (LCB) – Left-sided Centre Back
  • 3 (RWM) – Right Wide Midfielder
  • 7 (LWM) – Left Wide Midfielder
  • 8 (CM) – Central Midfielder
  • 9 (ST) – Striker

Pressing Team (Blue):

  • 9 (ST) – Striker
  • 8 (CM) – Central Midfielder
  • 7 (RWM) – Right Wide Midfielder
  • 11 (LWM) – Left Wide Midfielder
  • 5 (RD) – Right-sided Defender
  • 6 (LD) – Left-sided Defender

1. Initial Setup from Kick-Off

  • Red's 5 (RCB) and 4 (LCB) split wide to stretch the Blue press and draw out their 9 (ST).
  • The GK should assess the positioning of Blue's 9 (ST) and 8 (CM) to determine the optimal side for distribution.
  • Distribution must be disguised to prevent Blue from anticipating and accelerating their press.

2. Right-Side Build-Out Scenario

  • If the ball is played to Red's 5 (RCB), Blue's 9 (ST) and 11 (LWM) are expected to press aggressively.
  • Red's 3 (RWM) and 8 (CM) should position themselves between the press line and Blue's midfield line.
  • Red's 3 (RWM) steps infield to receive the ball behind the press

3. Maintaining Width and Creating Passing Options

  • If Blue's 11 (LWM) marks Red's 3 (RWM) tightly:
    • Red maintains width through 3 (RWM).
    • Red's 8 (CM) shifts laterally to open passing lanes to both 5 (RCB) and 3 (RWM).
    • Possible passing sequences:
      • 5 (RCB) → 3 (RWM) → 8 (CM)
      • 5 (RCB) → 8 (CM)

4. Countering Central Pressure

  • If Blue's 8 (CM) marks Red's 8 (CM) and blocks central progression:
    • Red can bypass the midfield with a longer pass down the right channel targeting 9 (ST).

Dish Build Out

Dish Build-Out Pattern (7v7)

Team in Possession (Red):

  • GK – Goalkeeper
  • 4 (LCB) – Left-sided Centre Back
  • 5 (RCB) – Right-sided Centre Back
  • 3 (RWM) – Right Wide Midfielder
  • 7 (LWM) – Left Wide Midfielder
  • 8 (CM) – Central Midfielder
  • 9 (ST) – Striker

Pressing Team (Blue):

  • 9 (ST) – Striker
  • 8 (CM) – Central Midfielder
  • 7 (RWM) – Right Wide Midfielder
  • 11 (LWM) – Left Wide Midfielder
  • 5 (RD) – Right-sided Defender
  • 6 (LD) – Left-sided Defender

1. Concept and Objective

The Dish build-out aims to drag the Blue press wide and shallow, creating difficulty for Blue's 9 (ST) and 7 (RWM) to close down the second pass effectively. This shape encourages quick ball movement and exploits the space left by an overcommitted press.

Where the opposition press with a 2- 2 -2 formation this will be particularly effective.

2. Key Movements and Roles

  • Red's 8 (CM) plays a pivotal role and must work to lose their marker (Blue 8) and find a passing lane.
  • Due to the shallow nature of the press, the ball must be shifted quickly to avoid interception, especially if Blue's 7 (RWM) anticipates and jumps early.

3. Central Penetration Option

  • If Blue's 7 (RWM) holds their run:
    • Red's 4 (LCB) can look to play directly through the centre to 8 (CM) or 9 (ST), depending on the line of sight and pressure.
    • This direct pass can bypass the press and initiate forward momentum.

4. Advancing the Attack

  • Once the ball reaches 8 (CM), Red's 7 (LWM) should push up and support closely.
  • Red's 9 (ST) should make a channel run to pull Blue's defenders out of central areas.
  • The opposite winger (Red 3 (RWM)) can invert and occupy the space vacated by 9 (ST), creating a dynamic attacking shape.

V Shape Build Out

V Shape Build-Out Pattern (7v7)

Team in Possession (Red):

  • GK – Goalkeeper (typically takes goal kicks, but in this case replaced by another player)
  • 4 (LCB) – Left-sided Centre Back (taking the goal kick)
  • 5 (RCB) – Right-sided Centre Back
  • 3 (RWM) – Right Wide Midfielder
  • 7 (LWM) – Left Wide Midfielder
  • 8 (CM) – Central Midfielder
  • 9 (ST) – Striker

Pressing Team (Blue):

  • 9 (ST) – Striker
  • 8 (CM) – Central Midfielder
  • 7 (RWM) – Right Wide Midfielder
  • 11 (LWM) – Left Wide Midfielder
  • 5 (RD) – Right-sided Defender
  • 6 (LD) – Left-sided Defender

1. Concept and Objective

The V Shape build-out is designed for situations of high press, where numerical superiority is difficult to achieve. Instead, the focus is on gaining field position through a longer initial pass.

2. Goal Kick Setup

  • Red's 4 (LCB) takes the goal kick (normally the GK, but adapted due to player availability).
  • Red's 5 (RCB) positions at an angle near the edge of the box, offering a short pass option.
  • This positioning creates a dilemma for Blue's 9 (ST):
    • If Blue's 9 marks 5 (RCB) closely, Red can exploit a 1v1 in midfield between the 8s.
    • If Blue's 9 starts wider, Red can play directly to 8 (CM).

3. Midfield Play Options

  • Depending on Blue's 8 (CM) positioning:
    • Red's 8 (CM) can lay the ball back to initiate a pass to 9 (ST).
    • Alternatively, 8 (CM) can turn and attack, creating a 2v2 against Blue's back line.

4. Advancing the Attack

  • If Blue is well-structured in their reset shape:
    • Red shifts 8 (CM) and 9 (ST) toward 7 (LWM) to create an overload on the left hand side
    • A diagonal pass can be played to 7 (LWM).
    • If possession is lost, Red has higher numbers around the ball to press and recover quickly.

5. Counter to Defensive Adjustment

  • If Blue reads the overload and 11 (LWM) shifts centrally to cover:
    • Red can switch play to 3 (RWM), who now has space to exploit on the opposite flank.
