7v3 BOTB

Organization: 20x40 space (size to fit number of players & playing space). 4 defenders outside play area. 3v3 / 4v4 inside play area. Play always starts with Blue team who is trying to maintain possession. As soon as Red team dispossesses Blue team, they work ball back ASAP to Defenders. As soon as ball is passed outside play area, game becomes 7v3 to goal. If blue gets ball back from Red team after it is out of the box - 1 point. If Red scores a goal - 1 point.

Coaching Points: While blue team possesses ball, defenders must constantly organize quickly to defend against threat of blue breaking lines of Mid Fielders. As soon as Red MF get ball, Red defenders must open up and create passing lanes. If ball comes from left side, defenders may try to switch and counter attack right side. Mid fielders should give defenders passing lanes to inside box (they need to stay central). Help MFs & FBs to identify when to press attack and when to drop to a safe space. Encourage AM to stay central and FBs to make runs on outer goals. Encourage team to attack middle goal as well as outer goals.(build through middle). Show how switches can go through MF.

Communication: Drop, Switch, I got ball

Scoring: Blue team scores a point if they complete 5 passes or score a goal. Red team scores a point if they score a goal.

Progressions: Add a GK (Coach or player) for a 2nd drop. Trap Red MFs (Only) in box; blue players can roam once ball is passed back. Remove inner box and play 8v4 / 6v6, etc.

3v3 to 2 goals

Objective: Teach players to identify where space is and how to position themselves to support players on the ball if they cannot go forward with the goal trying to switch the ball to the player who is in space.

Setup: 20x30, size as needed. This works best with 2 teams of 3 or 4. Assign positions (CB+2 MF, optional F).

Play: 3v3/4v4 to 2 goals. Play starts in the back with defending team in their half until first touch (like a goal kick with the midline acting as the 18). Attacking team must change the point of attack depending on where the defending team have positioned themselves and where space is. CB role: central defender is to play a pivot role to provide an option for the player who cannot go forward and switch the ball to the player where the space to attack is.

Coaching points: 1) The first thought should be forward, dribble and attack the space if you have space in front of you (Left/Right Midfielder). 2) If the player cannot go forward create an option for them to go backward (Central defender). 3) Once the Central defender has received the ball their first touch must take them towards space. 4) The LM or RM should move an area where there is space. ( If the left midfielder cannot move forward encourage players to identify that space is on the right side and so as the central defender receives the ball the right midfielder should know to spread a far right as possible)

Questions: 1) If you cannot dribble forward where can you go? 2) Where can you move to help support your teammate if they cannot go forward? 3) If you received the ball, should your first touch be towards the pressure or away from the pressure? 4) Where you should go to try and receive the ball?

Clear it or Build it?

Organization: Play inside the 18 box. Setup cones as shown.

Play: Defenders have a 2 touch limit. 4 Defenders (Red) look to pass ball to Coach (6) to start. Attacker(s) (Blue) try to dispossess and score goal (no GK). Play starts with Coach (6) passing ball into defense. Each time the defenders pass back to the 6, another Attacker enters the game. Rotate Defenders and attackers.

Progressions: Replace coach with a player at the 6 position. Have the Attackers start with the ball. Increase playing area. Play to goals. Add a GK to allow for more combinations.

Coaching Points: Red team must determine when pass the ball or when to clear the ball high and wide (When they are Numbers UP - build it. If not - Clear it).

Scoring: Red team scores a point each time they pass to 6 OR clear it high and wide when appropriate. Blue scores when they score a goal.
