Introduction:
Principles of play:
Positive decisions to play through, around or over
Move the ball quickly to find the spare player
Confidence to receive the ball
Sub principles:
Anticipate the Defensive transition
Apply quick pressure on the ball
Learning objectives:
To prepare for the next match with the intention to work on sequences of play in our own half so we can dominate possession in the opponents half allowing us to work on attacking patterns of play in the final 3rd. The patterns of play in the final 3rd will be covered in a different session.
The team shape is critical to ensure players know their responsibilities during the game depending what part of the pitch we have possession of the ball. As we will be playing expansive football, players must be aware of their responsibilities in a defensive transition.
Format:
This is an 11v11 match preparation session where we will use the full pitch. The session will be in 10 min blocks with an intervention of 1.5 mins to go through different solutions. Feedback to the players will be concurrent through the session and I will aim to coach individuals during game play rather than stop the whole session

Block 2 - Playing out from the back switch of play.
Team will set up as illustrated from a goal kick based on the opponent protecting central areas with a narrow front 3 and a narrow midfield 3.
The ball is initially played to a centre back. If the opponent central midfielder is anticipating the ball to the full back then a switch of play could be on to expose the opposite side. The centre back will then look for the CDM to drop deep to receive the ball. IF the number 9 curves their run to block the switch of play through the goalkeeper then the gap should appear to play the CDM. If the CDM has time to turn he can then play the opposite full back or play forward to the CAM, who makes a forward run to receive the ball in behind the midfield. If the CDM cannot turn then he will play first time to the centre half of goalkeeper who will make a decision if they can play to the full back. The front 3 should look to be on the shoulder of the back 4 so they are pinned back to create more space in our own half.

Block 3 - Playing out from the back overload on one side.
Team will set up as illustrated from a goal kick.
The ball is initially played to a centre back. As this happens the full back will make a forward run and the CDM will drop into the full back position. The CAM will position themselves to create an overload by either dropping to receive the pass down the line or inside. The wide forward will drop deep 5 yards to give the full back a problem of dropping deep or following the forward run of the full back. Their is a 5v4 overload on this side with the intention to play the ball in behind the back 4, into the opponents half.

Block 1
Block 1 - Playing out from the back into wide areas.
Team will set up as illustrated from a goal kick. The goalkeeper will initially make the following decision:
IF the the opposition wide player is positioned to press the centre back then he will play to the full back.
IF the opposition wide player has retreated then the goalkeeper will play to the centre back. The full back starting position is shown, however they will adjust this to create a passing angle for the centre back which will mean the opponent either blocks the passing line or allows the ball to be played to the full back.
If he allows the ball to be played to the full back then the CAM will time their run into the channel, in behind the full back with the wide forward dropping deep to receive the ball.
The CDM will drop deep to anticipate any transition and also to provide an additional option for the player on the ball
