Improving first touch

See the guidance at the top of this page to understand why you are not seeing interactive Football/Soccer images.
Purpose:
With the ball: Improve the players ability to receive on the half turn - on either foot - and quickly play forward.
Without the ball: Improve straightline speed
Set up:
15 x 15 metre square divided into 2 lanes.
1 mini goal at end of each lane
centre line (orange cones)
Passers gate (red markers)
12 players, split into 2 groups of 6 who work separately, 3 as attackers and 3 as defenders
(If you have less than 12, just have one group split into 2 x 4 or 2 x 5)
Action:
Receiving player stands half way between the red gate (passer) and goal line to the left or right of the area.
Passer plays a pass to receiver's back foot.
Receiver must receive with one touch and finish with the second touch, using the same foot.
As soon as passer plays the pass, the defender (blue) sets off to win the ball, stop a goal being scored or score himself.
Limit the time per rep to a few seconds to avoid it developing into a 1v1 (which is not the focus of this drill).
Players move up a position every rep; i.e. passer becomes receiver.
Change attacking and defending team as needed
Coaching points:
Passer: firm and accurate pass to receiver's back foot (look at target before passing)
Receiver: stand with an open body, on toes and ready to receive, watch ball on to foot, positive first touch toward goal, look at target and strike ball into the net using the same foot. Make appropriate adjustments for inaccurate passes.Defender: sprint at maximum speed to put pressure on receiver.
During the drill, change position of receiver from left to right of area so that players get an opportunity to use both feet.
Targets:
Winning team gets the most goals
Progression: make area smaller (i.e. less distance between passer and goal)
Regressions: delay defenders' entry until receiver makes his first touch.

Purpose: improve use of first touch to play away from pressure
Set up:
8 - 10 yards square
2 teams of 4 - 6 players
Red team: 1 player in the middle, 4 - 5 on the outside with a ball each
Blue team: 1 player in the middle defending, 4 - 5 resting / collecting balls
Action:
Outside player passes to team mate in the middle who scores in any goal
Middle player then goes looking for a pass from another outside player with a ball
Play continues until all balls are gone
Change teams: blues becoming attacking players, reds rest, collect balls and prepare for next drill
Challenge: can you score first time
Target:
How many goals can you score
Coaching points:
Read middle players movement and body language to find out when and where he wants a pass
Middle player to use fake movements, checks etc. to deceive defender
Pass to middle players foot that helps him score, pass in front not behind
Progress:
Must score once in each of four goals
Limit to one touch finish
Reduce number of goals
Regress:
Make area bigger
Add a second middle player
