CM movements

Ball is played out to strong side by GK in this instance

1. Strong side HCM (holding centre mid) moves against the grain with a REVERSE MOVEMENT

- get yourself beyond the two strikers of the opposition to provide a third line pass (a pass that splits the opposition while penetrating them at the same time)

- open up body to play forward

- shoulder check to see where the opponent is

- understand that if the opposition midfield steps up to mark tight, there is an opportunity to do a 1 touch pass to the weak side RCB (Right Centre Back)

- if the opposition CM doesn't press high, receive the ball on the half turn and take a forwards positive touch to drive with speed in to space

2. ACM (Attacking Centre mid) moves in opposite direction of HCM to provide the option for a PENETRATING pass

- beware of the oppositions midfielder and run OVER top so that you remain on the blind side and behind the eye line

- provide the outlet option as the top of the diamond

- If ball gets played forward be aware of the support underneath from the HCM and LCB if there is no turn option

- attempt to receive the ball on the half turn (beware of surroundings of opposition and your strikers) to drive forward into attacking third.

3. HCM on the weak side stays in the diagonal pocket to provide an outlet pass for the near side HCM to switch the point of attack. HCM needs move up slightly while staying on the opposite side of the field for a number of reasons

- get on the blind side of the opposition midfielder

- prevent the opposition midfielder from moving up to press and congest our playing out area

- provide a forward outlet for our HCM who has shown on the strong side

Strong side LCB with ball

Once the ball gets played to the LCB, it's important that the HCM on the strong side is able to provide the outlet to switch the point of attack.

- movement has to be quick and swift

- have to calculate the effect of moving into the space

- provide a split pass for the LCB

ACM has to shift across to create the penetration pass

DIAGONAL POCKET HCM

- maintain your shape and be patient

- do not get sucked in to the middle of the field as you'll take away the option for switching the point of attack

- stay higher up the field and don't get drawn back to far other wise we will not be able to attack upon the switch

- be ready to drop in to provide a proper angle of support when the HCM on the strong side is able to receive the ball

Switching to Weak Side

Ball gets switched from STRONG SIDE to WEAK SIDE

HCM who was originally in the DIAGONAL POCKET has to provide a REVERSE MOVEMENT AGAINST THE GRAIN to provide a THIRD LINE PASSING option

HCM who was originally on the strong side to stretch the field by moving up into the DIAGONAL POCKET on the opposite side of the ball

ACM has to move across to be the top of the diamond and provide the opportunity to PENETRATE
