Training Session Plan: Defending Numerical Advantages
Session Focus
Principle: Defending Numerical Disadvantages / Protecting the Goal When Outnumbered
Coached Team: Purple (Defending)
Opposition Team: Blue (Attacking)
Objectives
Improve defensive organization and decision-making under pressure when outnumbered.
Encourage compact defending and identifying pressing triggers.
Develop quick transitions into attack after winning possession.

Area: 30 x 40 yards
Players: 11 total
1 x GK (Purple)
5 x Defenders (Purple)
4 x Attackers (Blue)
1 x Neutral/Extra player (joins in Block 2)
Goals:
1 Full-size goal (Purple defends)
2 Mini target goals for counter-attacks (Purple attacks)
Equipment: Balls, cones, bibs, timer
Structure:
Block 1: 7 min
Break: 1 min
Block 2: 7 min
Key Coaching Points
Principle Coaching Point
Communication Constant talking, clear roles, alert to triggers
Compactness Tight lines, protect central space, deny through balls
Delaying Attacks Show outside, slow the attack, reduce options
Intercept/Transition Recognize poor touches, trigger press, fast counter (5 passes to goal)
Block 1 – Structured Overload (7 mins)
Objective: Blue (attackers) must score within 6 passes
Purple (defenders): Regain and counter-attack within 5 passes
Rules:
Defenders must delay, block central areas, and do not dive in
On regaining possession, transition quickly to score in mini goals
Focus: Shape, patience, quick counter decisions
1 Min Break – Reset, Hydrate, Coach Key Feedback
Block 2 – Timed Attacks & Dynamic Numbers (7 mins)
Objective: Blue must score within 20 seconds
If Purple regains possession twice in a row, Blue adds 1 more attacker (creating higher overload)
Challenges for Attackers:
Score in 20 seconds
Score within 4 passes
Focus for Defenders:
Compactness, urgency, transitions
Communication becomes even more critical with increasing overload
Tactical Problems & Solutions
Problem Solution
1. Central Overload - Force play wide with angled pressing
- Use nearest defender to cut inside pass
- Mid-block shape to funnel wide
2. Quick Combinations - Apply early pressure on the ball
- 2nd/3rd defender provide cover and block passing lanes
- Use communication to switch marking and anticipate passes
Coaching Interventions (Live or Freeze Frame)
"Can we stay connected?" → Emphasize defensive shape
"Where is the trigger?" → Identify pressing cues
"Can we go now?" → Encourage positive transition decision
"Where’s the help?" → Highlight support and cover
