Dear Technical Director,

Before you lies the new sliding clinic 2013! Sliding is a spectacular form of hockey, which is unfrequently trained at clubs. If the wheather is fair, you have the right age/skills group and a properly watered pitch, this clinic can provide for some exciting hockey! Sliding and rolling is quite dangerous however, so this clinic aims to minimize the risk of injuries. You might prepare the Kids further by - for example - instructing them to wear long pants or sliding pants. Below you will find general information about the idea behind this clinic.

This sliding clinic has been designed as one whole package. That means, that it includes a demo, a warming-up, description of the structure, the exercises and a requirement list.

This clinic is a hybrid clinic. That means that this clinic starts out as a central clinic, and after three rounds turns to a decentral clinic for another four rounds. In its current form, this clinic can take up to 80 Kids. There is a specific reason for this.

Sliding and rolling can only be done in a safe and fun way, if you have the right pitch available. I assume that there is at least 1 'right pitch' available at every location, but never 3 'right pitches'. That means that if you have 160 Kids, you can never do this clinic with everyone simultanously.

The solution is to plan your day also in a hybrid setup. In the morning, Field A (the proper field), does the sliding clinic and Field B does any other clinic. In the afternoon the two groups swap. This is why the clinic is set-up to take 80 Kids as maximum, since this would be half of the biggest camps.

For the first three rounds, the Kids receive instructions in the Demo Zone. They go out to one of the eight available squares with their trainer to practice the basis of sliding and rolling (for safety reasons, this is done centrally). When the Kids come together after round three, the trainers will be setting up a specific, pre-instructed exercise in that same square while the Kids enjoy a small water break and the pitch is watered.

After this, the Kids go to the square where they were last. However, from this point on, the Kids will rotate four rounds (one half passes all the red squares, the other half passes all the blue squares). Since exercises 1 to 4 are identical to exercises 5 to 8, no Kid misses an exercise/ After this, a final cooling down concludes the clinic.

Good luck!

Duane

Requirements:

- 1 real goal, for the Demo Zone

- 8 goals for the smaller pitches (may be goals of cones)

- Two blue containers filled with water, a hose, or any other means for keeping the pitch wet locally

- 400 balls

- ± 125 cones

- 10 bibs

DEMO!

In this DEMO, I assume that you as a TD follow my advice in the Organisation-slide. That means that I assume that you adopt a hybrid setup for the day, meaning that there are two different clinics at the same time, and in the afternoon the two groups swap. Therefor, this demo has to show techniques of both clinics and will be presented only in the morning (!).

Here is the demo for the sliding part!

Structure:

Two groups are seated in the two coloured areas. It is time-efficient to place alle the groups of one pitch in one area for a speedy send-away (for example groups 1-9). You need at least four demo-players for the entire demo, of which all are able to slide (!)

Excercise 1: Hit and Roll

The TD stands at the top of the circle. At the white double-cone a player starts running diagonally towards the D. Prior to entry, the TD rolls a ball (still inside the circle) in front of the player. The demo-player either (1) receives the ball, shoots on target and rolls over or (2) shoots the ball one-touch on goal and slides/rolls after the shot. After that the players on the other side start and the TD rolls the next ball to the other side.

Pointers:

1. Demo-players must shoot the ball with the 'wrong foot' up front. Shooting with right-foot up front when shooting a forehand shot. Shooting with left-foot up front when shooting on backhand!

2. When performing version 2, you as TD must roll the ball slowly and too far away for the player, so a dive makes sense (!)

3. Players must walk around the 'stands' when returning to the starting cones. This way, he/she does not interfere with the rest of the exercise and rotation between the yellow and white starting cones is facilitated.

4. Make sure that as a TD you throw balls both close to the body as well as in front of the body, so both method 1 and 2 are properly displayed.

Exercise 2: Diving deflection

The player in orange sweeps the ball from the white double-cones towards the player in blue. While the blue player is carrying the ball towards the circle and preparing for a shot to the second post, the orange player runs around towards that post and dives for a diving deflection. After this the exercise is repeated on the other side. The players rotate between passing and sliding, but not between sides.

Pointers:

1. Timing is essential! Choose and adjust the distances of the cones wisely!

2. When the pass it isn't going well, let the blue player sweep the ball for more control.

3. When the timing or direction of the pass isn't going well, you can also put a cone on the baseline, so the blue player can aim for that cone.

Warming up

Essence:

Since sliding and rolling is physically intensive, this is a prepared warming up. This warming-up corresponds to the theme of sliding.

Structure:

The leader of the warming-up stands at the center of the pitch while everyone else (staff included!) runs around him in one circle. For younger groups (<14) without ball. For older groups (>14) with ball. The trainers shouts orders from time to time, which the Kids (and staff!) have to execute. Obviously, these orders are also aimed at making them wet, to overcome the fear of sliding and rolling.

Orders:

- Turn Left! (stop, turn to the left, run in other direction)

- Turn Righ! (stop, turn to the right, run in other direction)

- Kangaroo! (jump)

- Frog! (frog jumps)

- Crocodile (stop, lie down on pitch with face down, roll over and continue running)

- Tumble Roll!

- Photo! (stop and stand in a cool position)

- Tigre! (crawl on belly)

Pointers:

 1. Next to warming-up, the goal of this exercise is also for the Kids to overcome the fear of diving. It is important that actually get down on the field (and get wet).

2. Make sure the staff truly participates: Kids need a good example...!

3. Adjust the names to the camp theme or a selfmade story

Cooling down

Essence:

After extreme movements like sliding and full speed running, a good cooling down for stretching is important. You can use the same setup as the warming up. It can also be a nice social moment to stretch with all the kids. What kind of stretches I leave to you.
