Area size - 60m x 50m approx
Red team play a formation of 2-4-1-1 (as in the function). Red team to be coached.
Blue team play a formation of 3-4-1.
Instructions
Condition Red team so that a goal can only be scored by playing through the marked area thus encouraging play though the lone striker/withdrawn striker and central MF players and thus restricting scoring of goals from crosses.
Condition red and blue wide MF players that they must stay in the channels.
When Blue team are in possession, they have 10 seconds in which time to score a goal.
Coaching Points
*Movement to receive, support and create space - Can red central MF players find space to receive on half turn, play forward, help the man on the ball, drag opponents out of central areas etc.
*Angles and distances - Receive on the half turn, keep good distance between team mates in midfield so passing lines are available to lone striker and withdrawn striker, when the ball is played forward offer angles of support to lone striker, can red wideMF players 'stretch' the opposition midfield.
*Body position and first touch - Receive on strong side when possible, be on the half turn, use of back foot for first touch, can wingers face forward when they receive the ball to be positive, lone striker may need to play with his back to goal to protect the ball etc.
*Quality and selection of pass - Keep possession and play forward when possible, be patient, switch play to help create passing lines/gaps, can the central defenders step in to create an overload and more passing lines.
*Decision making - When/How/Where/Who to pass/move/support.
*Awareness - Of team mates runs/positions, space and position of opponents.
Progressions
1. Remove the intial conditions but place a single restriction that no goals can be scored from crosses.
2. Remove all conditions.
