SET UP:
12 X 12 GRID (x8). Play 4 v 2. One ball but have a supply of 4 or 5 balls for each grid.
ACTIVITY:
Players on the outside looking to retain possesion against two defenders in the middle. Players making bad pass or poor control go in the middle (first defender in is the first defender out). To increase speed of play, as soon as a mistake is made the defending player winning ball immediately passes to an outside player to get started again. DO NOT wait until everyone is back in position to restart play.
Functional positions as we consider player on the ball as the #5 or #6 DM acting as the pivot point. Opposite player functional as #6 or #9 depending on who is playing ball.
COACHING POINTS:
weight of pass/angle of pass (playing to the back/further foot)
receiving with furthest foot
body shape when receiving
movement off the ball to create correct support angles
playing to the space outside the grid

Objective:Passing and receiving on the back foot.
Organization:
- Players are position on the four corners of the grid with players occupying the two cones placed in the center of the grid. Balls start on opposite ends of the grid. Player A passes to Player B who receives with the back foot to play Player C. Player C then plays facing forward to opposite line where pattern also starts from there. Always working in a clockwise direction.
Variation: Counterclockwise direction.
Variation2: Combination play with players occupying middle cone(s).
Coaching Points:
Visual checking before receiving a pass.
-All players use both feet and inside foot to receive pass.
-Control with a turn (Inside players).
-Rapid movement to support the ball carrier.
-The intensity and speed of play should be high.
-Movements with the ball should be sharp and deliberate.
-Receiving the ball in an open position towards depth.
Interval Duration: 2 intervals x 5 minues; 10 minutes.

Setup: A rectangle, CB on one end and play always starts with the CB. Inlcude a #4, #8, #10 and then a Neutral player for an overload.
Concept: Objective is to keep posseion but it is directional trying to find #9. One point awarded each time pass to #9. Progession is to add a defender on each end. Can #9 hold the ball and go 1v1 or find attacker to finish?
Coaching Points: Maintain possession but always look for that killer pass (i.e., the penetrating pass). Move to support as an option. Find the open "foot" to recieve on.

Pattern No.2
Similar to the previous pattern - except, when Red no.9 comes deep, the Blue Centre Back will follow him this time, in which case, Red no.8 clips the ball into Red no.7/11 depending on which Blue Centre Back has stayed with Red no.9. Opposite Midfield player must still follow in for a possible rebound - important to get into a good habit, with Red no.9 following in just in case.
Progressions
1. Introduce a Red no.10 to play in an attacking role alongside Red no.9. Communication between 9 & 10 is all important as to 1. Who comes deep to receive the pass or pull the Centre Back out; and 2. Who follows up any shot together with Red no.7 & 11, - if Red 9 goes deep, Red no.10 may follow up, with Red no.9 taking up a position on towards the edge of the area, looking for a second ball from any clearance by Blue team.
2. Replace yellow mannequin (LB/RB) with players, who together with Blue CB's, take on an active rather than passive role.
3. Replace yellow mannequins (LMF/RMF) with players - but condition them to position themselves so as to stop a direct passing line to Red no.7/11 from Red no.8

Aim: To improve players speed, agility and their ability to move dynamically.
Drill: Players are given different movements through the ladder e.g. single step in ladder, two steps in ladder, sideways etc.
Once the player moves through the ladder the coach plays them a pass, the player first touch needs to be outside the line of the cones, with their second being a pass back to the coach.
Key Points: The focus during the fast feet phase is on the player being light on their feet and executing the skill with fast, controlled movements.
The focus for the first touch phase is getting the ball out of their feet to the side and making an accurate pass back to the coach.
Some groups will use cones or poles instead of ladders. The drill still follows the same focus.
