Pattern Play with Decision Making (15 mins)

Organization: Player Rotation is 1-2-3-4-5-6 regardless of decision making

Instructions: Player 1 dribbles and passes a diagonal pass throgh one of the 3 gates to Player 2,4, or 3. The Player that recieves the ball opens up and connects with player 5 who then opens up, plays to Player 6 whoe dribbles and chips the ball to the GK.

Coaching Points: Player 1: Drive at speed to the cones. Make best decision on who to pass to. Who's timing of movement and body shape are the best option to connect with? Players 2,3, & 4: Checking in and out of space realistically. Angle of support to Player 1. Recieving the ball open (facing) and setting up the next pass with 1st touch. Play ball to Player 5 with 2nd touch. Player 5: Checking in and out of space realistically. Inside run OR outside run? Look to split defenders (mannequins). Angle of support to Player with ball. Recieving the ball open (facing) and setting up the next pass with 1st touch. Play ball to Player 6 with 2nd touch. Player 6: Realistic Movement. 1st touch to drive at OR beat defender. Try to go inside if possible. Get to the middle of the goal.

Questions: Who do these players represent on the field? Why are we not going straight to Player 5?

Progression: Have Players 2 and 4 start in a gate, vacate the space for Player 1 to dribble into, then check back for support of Player 1.

Pattern Play Progressions (20 mins)

Organization: Same as above, but add passive, then active defender(s). Start with passive 1 defender, then 2. Progress to 1 active defender who isn't locked into a gate, then 2.

Instructions: Defender(s) start on green cone on Player 1's 1st touch, go to block one of the 3 gates. Player 1 can no longer pass through that gate. With active defender(s), the defenders oar not locked in any gate, but can move freely from gate to gate trying to intercept the pass from Player 1, then are free to defend the next pass(es).

Coaching Points: Movements and angles of approach of Players 2,3,4 are dictated by the action(s) of the defender(s). Player 1 must decide what the best/only pass to make is (Who's "on"?).

Progressions: 2 passive defenders. 1 active defender. 2 active defenders. Defenders can defend Player 6, who is now trying to score on goal. Change Mannequins to live defenders.

5v3 (4v3 in the middle) (20 mins)

Organization: 5v3 (4v3 in the middle) of a 20x30 grid.

Instructions: Offensive team tries to get the ball from one side to the other without losing possession. Pass out go out, recieving player joins in game and play goes the opposite direction. To get out of the grid, the middle 4 must do one of the following: (1) 1-2 or give and go, (2) 3rd man run combination, (3) all interior players touch the ball, or (4) dribble under control over the end line to recieving player. Rotate defenders every 2-3 minutes. If defenders win the ball they try to keep possession OR dribble over the opposite endline and new player joins in with new ball.

Coaching Points: Can the players replicate the movements, coaching points, and decision making of the previous pattern play activities? Offensive Players double movement to create space for self OR another offensive Player. Don't crowd each others space. Drive forward if the space is there. Drop between the defenders for split passes - break the defending lines of the defenders to force a recovery run. Pass forward if possible.

8v6 on 1/2 field

Organization: 8v6 on 1/2 field. Whites try to get to 1/2 line. Blues look to score on big goal.

Coaching Points: Can the white team create space for one of their backs to dribble (penetrate) and overload the midfield? Stay beyond your defenders to create space for penetrating run from the backs. Wide play stays wide to create space in the middle. Show and then go to create space. Look fro overlap when touch goes inside.
