POSSESSION (20 mins)
- Two teams - Team numbers based on players available
- Play always begins in red square with red team (6v4)
- Reds aim to make 7 passes = 1pt if achieved
- Blues aim to regain the ball and play out of the red square to a teammate. When this happens, play opens up to the bigger square (7v6). Blues then aim to make 7 passes = 1pt if achieved
- If reds regain the ball, they must get the ball back into the red square to play 6v4 again
- Rotate teams between blocks
COACHING POINTS + INTERVENTIONS:
- Counter press upon losing the ball. Affect ball, man or space. Closest players = smoother the ball. Supporting players = attach to free players or block spaces they may play out. 11v11 context: Strikers and wingers counter-pressing opponent defenders after losing the ball in the final 3rd
- If counter press broken = recover to space to try and corner team in possession. 11v11 context: Midfielders recovering into own half after losing ball in opponents half
- If losing the ball in the 7v6, counter press to avoid reds getting ball back into square, using same decision-making process
- Drive pressing and transitional behaviours with heightened and intensified coaching voice
POTENTIAL PROGRESSIONS/REGRESSIONS:
- Have player from both teams start in the outside box, challenging the blue team's ability to break out once regaining ball
- Add mini-goal on edges for blue team to try and score into once breaking out of red box, placing increased importance on red team's ability to keep ball
- Give individual conditions, challenges and rewards, based on their development needs
