Learning Outcomes

The body is an instrument/tool that can be used to assist to defending and attacking.

1. Introduce players to proper defensive stance.

2. Introduce defending with physicality.

3. Develop players' ability to close down with speed.

4. Develop players' ability to close down at an angle.

5. Develop players' ability to identify when to tackle.

What?:  Closing down space in control and using the body to successfully defend in 1v1 situations

When?: 1v1 defensive situations,

Where?: Anywhere on the field where you are the 1st defender

Why?: In order to successfully delay the attack, and to recovery the ball to score.

Who?: 2-11 positions, the player closest to the ball when out of possession, (1st defender)

Warm Up (15 mins)

Organization:

- 6 yard channels - Gate ( 2 cones) 6 ys apart.

- Balls with attackers

Instructions

- Players look to close down on the ball together.

- Focus on body shape, proper stance, and angle of approach.

- Attackers look to get through the gate on opposing side.

- 1 pt if attacker dribbles through gate

- 1 pt defender wins prevents

- 3 pt defender win and counter over the line

-Switch sides

Coaching Points:

- Speed and angle of approach.

- Proper defensive stance - surfer position.

- Close space quickly and slow down on approach.

-Defending with a low center of gravity

-Initiating physical contact, by using your body as a shield to place yourself between the attack and the ball

Questions:

- Where do you want to meet the defender?

- How do you want get to the ball?

- What does your body position look like? why

Main Activity (20 mins)

Organization:

- 3 Fields

- 3 Teams

Instructions:

- Defenders will pass ball to attacker and release upon pass

- Defender tries deny the forward from scoring, if wins caps the ball on the cone line

-1 pt for a goal in mini net or dribble through gate

-1 pt for defender to win the ball +1 Bonus if they cap the ball on the opposing endline

- Swicth after 3 minutes

- 2nd round switch the goals to the other side (field 2)

- Close down the space quickly ( why)

- Body Shape ( Where)

- Patience for the cue to win the ball ( 3b's) What

- Reminders of when to poke (toe) vs block (back foot)

- Head up

Progressions/Regressions:

R-Smaller field

Pr- Have attackers start with ball

Pr- Add nets on both sides of the dfield

R- Put a gate and make attacker dribble through

Conditioned Game (20 mins)

Organization:

- 3v3 - 2v2

- 2 Minigoals

Instructions:

- Teams look to score in opposing goal.

- Re-starts are dribble in or kick-in.

- 1 pt -goal

- 3 pt - win in attacking half and score

Coaching Points:

- Close down the space quiclkly ( why)

- Body Shape ( Where)

- Patience for the cue to win the ball ( 3b's) What

Questions:

- What are the cues to win the ball?

- Head down, ball goes negative, too big of a touch, bad touch ( BIG/BAD/BACK)

- When should we put pressure on the first attacker?

- How can you adjust your body to force the player ( to make play predictable)
