Warm-up (5 mins)

Organisation:

Set up as shown

Activity:

-Goalkeepers start on far post, with a ball each

-They run to the near post and throw to me

-I then play the ball over the top of them to adjust and catch

Coaching points:

-Body shape- Don't be square, open shoulders and feet

-Foot patterns- First few steps crossover, then short sharp steps

-Don't be worried about going to ground if off balance

Crossing- Deep to back post

Organisation:

-All crosses to come from deep area, aimed towards back post

-If possible, use a left and right footed server

Activity:

-Server can deliver balls in from anywhere in the shaded area

-Server can deliver different types of balls- Lofted, driven, whipped etc.

-Servers need to do inswinger and outswinger crosses

Coaching Points:

-Starting position in relation to the ball

-Stance and body language of the goalkeeper needs to be positive

-Assessment of the flight of the ball- "Late and fast"

-Decision making- Do we come or stay on our line?

-Communication- Early, loud shout

-Angle and speed of the GK's approach- quickest shortest route

-Timing and angle of Goalkeeper's take off

-Technique of catching at the safest and highest point- elboes slightly flexed and watch ball into hands

-Punching technique- Through the bottom and middle of the ball

-Recovery lines to defend goal- Appropriate footwork

-The roles of the defenders- depth, communication, protection and covering the goal

-If shout is away GK recovers to defend to the goal

Defending the second ball

Organisation:

-3 Servers, 1 GK working

Activity:

-Server 1 delivers a cross into the are

-GK then rolls to server 2 who touches and passes to server 3

-Server 3 takes their touch to the byline to replicate a cutback

-Server 3 can mix their service up to make it match realistic

Progression- Add a defender if we have an extra player

Coaching Points:

-See previous slide for crossing coaching points

-For the header back across goal:

-Positioning in goal from GK- GK doesn't go past near post

-Body shape- Nice open body position

-If GK shouts away they must drop back into goal ready for shot from server 3
