Start as a team (5 mins)

  • As players arrive they should socialize while getting light touches on the ball (e.g. juggling, passing)
  • Meet with players 30 minutes prior to kickoff.
  • Set focus for the warmup/game.
  • Give 1-2 objectives for the game to focus on during the warmup.
  • Go into dynamic warmups.

2v2 to 4 Goals (10 mins)

2v2/3v3 to 4 Goals. Coach plays ball in to either team to start play.

  • If the play continues for too long then the coach should start a countdown from 5-0 to facilitate the flow of the game. 1 round shouldn't last longer than 15-20 seconds.
  • Vary the starting position of players (e.g. start with a 50/50 ball in the middle, 1 line starts on the side of the field)
  • Reinforce the areas of focus for the game in the 2v2 (e.g. focus is movement off the ball = give and goes, overlaps, diagonal runs, double movements, etc.)
  • Compete - play first to 3 or most points after a time limit.

Half Field Game (10 mins)

Half Field Scrimmage

  • Reinforce 1-2 areas of focus for the game.
  • Set your build up team in the formation you'll use for the game - In this example, White is set up with a GK, 2 CB's (4/5), 2 FB's (2/3), and 2 CM (6/8). Put the players in the positions they'll play at the start of the game.
    • Opposition set up in what makes sense based on numbers
  • Build up team scores by dribbling over the line in the two counter goals (you can have the build up team pass into a target, pass into counter goals, etc.). Avoid having the ball go into the opponent's half too much so not to disrupt their warmup.
  • Counter team scores in goal against GK.
  • Complete - Keep Score
  • Natural restarts - take goal kicks, corners, throw ins, fouls.

  • Have players tell you the 1-2 areas of focus for the game
  • Motivating words / players motivate
  • Cheer / Chant before going out on the field to provide unity
