Football/Soccer Session (Beginner): Block 2 - Week 10 - Mr Men

Whole Session

Assistants to be alert at all times & encourage participation from all players.

Group sizes maybe big so coach needs to be loud, energetic & organised.

Session to comprise of 3 separate games based on the Mr Men characters

Players to start by dribbling the ball around the area, using both feet & taking small touches

Session Set up - 

Area big enough for all players to be dribbling round

Ball each for all players

Bring players into ask them how many Mr Men Characters they can name & tell them they are going to meet some of them in the session

Mr Men Warm Up 

Different characters = different movement with ball

Coach to introduce all over numerous different stoppages

Mr Fast - Dribble fast

Mr Slow - Small touches, walking around area

Mrs Dance - 6 Toe taps then a 5 second dance

Mr Freeze - Foot on top of ball, freezing pulling a funny face

Mrs Wobble - Side to side's with the ball while arms out at the side wobbling

Mr Trick - Perform a turn/skill 

Give out rewards & Mr Men points for good dribbling & listening skills

Coaching Points -

Close control, small touches, use all parts of the foot, coordination, change of direction, scanning for space, awareness of other players/space

Mr Feathers Game

Coach & assistant to turn into Mr Feathers & all players turn into Mr Strike or Mrs Strike

Players have to kick the ball at Mr Feathers & force him to drop a feather

Coaches to tuck loads of bibs or have loads of bibs in their hands, every time they hit the coach they drop a bib to the floor

Whoever has the most feathers at the end wins

*Coach to make sure all players end up with at least 1 bib.

Coaching Points -

All of the above + striking the ball with laces & passing with inside of foot

Mr Greedy Game

Coach now turns into Mr Greedy who wants to take all the footballs away from players by trapping footballs with his 'greedy cones'

Players have to dribble around the area keeping control of the ball

Coach will try to throw a cone to hit the players footballs

If the coach hits their balls, players to put the ball to the side, be given some cones & they are now on Mr Greedy's team

Whoever is the last player left is the winner

*Game can be played where all players stay in all the time & have a points system in place

Changing of direction reiterated

Players will be ready to move onto matches after these 3 games. Theme can be continued as all players have to name themselves Mr ... or Mrs ... whilst playing games.
