SSG
Organisation/Conditions
2/3 pitch size
9v9 inc. GKs
Red team (coached) formation - 1-2-5-1 (in attack) or 1-4-3-1
Blue team formation - 1-4-3-1
Challenges/Targets
Red team encourgaed to play through the central areas
Blue team to play counter attack & have 8 seconds to score when in possession
Extra challenge/Progression - Blues change to 1341 formation to counter the red overload when the FB joins in. How do the reds react? Depends whether blues play 2 wide or more central.
Will there be more space down flanks? Move the ball quicker in the middle to beat men?
If not should be an overload in middle without help of FBs.
Key Points (on, around, away from the ball)
All MDG principles taken into SSG
Creative movements from 3 CM & 2 FB to create an overload in the central midfield to enable ball to move to the final third faster
Good communication between midfield 3 and FBs
Number 9 to stay high and central to offer depth and to stretch oppositon shape allowing extra room for numbers 8 & 10 to operate. Look for ball into feet, or sometimes in behind to keep defence guessing.
Create angles to open up new passing lanes in the middle.
Decision making on what type of pass (bounce pass, 1-2, pass into space infront of player)
Quick switch of play?
GK decision making . What side of the pitch to play out? Does it have to go through CB or straight tp FB?
CBs to split when GK has ball.

Organisation/conditions
20 x 25 area with 2 channels on either side for the FBs
Red team (coached) players - 2,3,6,8,10
3 blue centre midfielders
2 servers/target men (black) at either side of the area
When in possesion of ball, 1 FB is allowed to come into the middle section to create an overload of 4v3 in midfield, helping to stretch the oppostion midfield to gain more success.
Targets/Challenges
Reds to keep possession and get ball to target man (#10 or #9). If successful they must go back the other way to opposite target man. 1 point each time ball gets to target man.
Can they do it quickly to make most of overload before blue team get players back to defend?
If blues win ball back they must make 5 successful passes to get a point.
Progression (extra challenge) - limit touches of reds to ensure quick passing and decision making
Key Points
Can reds come up with their own combinations to make most of overload? Can they use the FBs effectively?
#6 drops into receive ball from server, receives on back foot, half turned to pass quickly to start attack. #3 plays into #8. #10 pulls blue defender away to leave space for #2 to play into target man.
#6 is a little deeper to provide cover if attack breaks down. However 3 midfielders must rotate but keep triangle shape.
Movement of #8 and #10 to pull blue midfielders out of position. At least one must stay high to offer depth and occupy one blue midfielder.
Opposite FB stays in the channels to provide width and also be an outlet pass if under pressure, also stretching opposition when they become compact.
Can they switch ball quickly to opposite FB to drag opposition out of position?
