Aim:

To introduce the chest pass and develop the skill

Objectives:

1. Explain what the chest pass is and how to perform it correctly

2. Introduce progressions of how to improve it

3. Practice the skill in a game related practice

4. Analyse the participants performance and provide constructive feedback 

Venue: Denis Donelly Park/ Games hall

Introducing the chest pass

Static passes to anyone in group

Competition:

First group to 10 passes

Coaching Points

  • Catch ball with hands in a W shape
  • Thumbs down
  • Keep arms in (no chicken wings)
  • Step in for momentum
  • Push the ball to partner's chest

Progressions / Adaptations

Can be done with more or fewer groups

Group size can be increased or decreased

Change competition target depending on skill level

Progressions:

Increase distance between group members

Increase passing speed

Adaptations:

Decrease distance between group members

Take their time, focus on the technical aspects

First group to 10 passes (each person passes at least once)

  • Head up looking for space
  • Move around
  • Do NOT stay still
  • Call out group member's name before passing

Game Related Practice (5 mins)

Organizational / Instructions

3 small groups

Area marked by cones

Introducing a defender into the chest pass practice

Pass to anyone in group

Number everyone in group 1-5 (more or less depending on group size)

When number is called out they run clockwise over to next team and try to get the ball

Competition:

First group to 10 passes before defender gets it (each person passes at least once)


Coaching Points

  • Catch ball with hands in a W shape
  • Thumbs down
  • Keep arms in (no chicken wings)
  • Step in for momentum
  • Push the ball to partner's chest
  • Head up looking for space
  • Move around
  • Do NOT stay still
  • Call out group member's name before passing
  • Do not allow the defender to get the ball

Progressions / Adaptations

Can be done with more or fewer groups

Group size can be increased or decreased

Change competition goal depending on

Progressions:

Set a time limit (the ball must be passed within 3 seconds)

Having 2 or more defenders instead of 1
