Introduction (15 mins)

Organization:

  • Groups of 4, 1 ball
  • 15 yd diamonds
  • 5 yd squares within the diamond

Instructions:

  • 3 players on the outside on the diamond
  • 1 player inside the small square
  • Outside players Pass the ball to the Inside player, then have the option to run to the Open corner of the diamond
  • Inside player Receives the Pass and Passes to one of the other corners
  • Switch every minute or every 10 passes to/from Inside Player

Coaching Points/Questions:

  • Proper receiving technique - toe up, heel down with the inside of the foot
  • Half turn upon receiving with the Back Foot
  • Inside player uses First Touch to prep for Pass to Outside players

Regressions/Progressions:

  • Incorporate receiving with Front Foot, and other surfaces of the foot
  • Encourage One-Touch Passing by the Inside Player
  • Make it Obligatory for Outside players to move to the Open Diamond cone

Main Activity (20 mins)

Organization:

  • Groups of 5, 2 balls
  • 15 yd diamonds
  • Remove inner square cones

Instructions:

  • 3 players on the outside on the diamond
  • 2 players inside the Diamond, one starts as the Attacker, one starts as the Defender
  • Outside players Pass the ball to the Attacker, then have the option to run to the Open corner of the diamond
  • Attacker Receives the Pass - from either of the two balls - and Passes to one of the other corners
  • If Defender wins the ball, switches roles with the Attacker
  • Points earned by completing a Passes to the outside Players
  • Switch Inside players every minute 

Coaching Points/Questions:

Conditioned Game (20 mins)

Organization:

  • 4v4 on 20x30 field
  • Players play 3v3 inside the field
  • 3 gates set up along both endlines
  • 1 player from each team stands behind the end line 

Instructions:

  • Teams score by completing passes through one of the three gates long the endline to their teammate
  • Upon scoring the teammate behind the gate is replaced by the player who passed it to them
  • Successful Team must touch up at the other end line before beginning to Defend

Coaching Points/Questions:

  • Look to retain Possession until the opportunity to Penetrate via dribble or Pass presents itself
  • Open Body shape upon receiving ball (*may have to explain what Open means)
  • Teammate behind the gate on the endline must control the ball by their second touch in order for their team to be awarded a point

Regressions/Progressions:

  • P: Successful Team remains in possession and must touch up (with the ball) at the other end line before beginning to attack again
  • R: Eliminate the three gates and just award points for a completed pass across the end line.
