DEFENDING THE OVERLOAD SPECIFIC

Defending Overloads

Out of Possession

  • The session will be focusing on the defending team (blues) to minimise opportunities for the red team to build out from the back in possession
  • The team out of possession will usually play in a 4-4-2 and I have removed the 2x FB
  • As the focus is to stop the opponents from building up from the back using overloads I have removed 2x wingers and restricted the ST as an end player
  • The 2x CBs will also be restricted to this area too to help generate overloads for the team in possession

In Possession

The team in possession will try to score in either of the 2x mini goals who will be their wingers in a game as an outlet

The team out of possession will be playing in a 4-3-3 but I have removed the 2x winger's

Pitch Layout:

  • The session will take part on half of the pitch and I have tapered the 2x wide zones
  • There will be 2x mini goals for the team out possession in the wide areas as when they win possession back they must score in these goals as these will be their wingers in a game as an outlet
  • Balls will start from the GK who will look to play to one of the defenders either side

Block 1

  • The first block I would ask either of the ST to lock off one side of the pitch to stop any potential switch on the opposite side of the pitch
  • This would happen by one ST blocking the switching pass either to the GK or opposite CB
  • The second ST would then drop to cover the passing lane into the opponents number 6
  • Defending team body shape would be open so that they entice the opponents into predictable passes for them to go and press quickly
  • The opposite WM on the defending team will narrow the pitch off leaving the furthest player free
  • The 2x CB will shuffle across with the ball to stay in line and compact with the midfield unit whilst 1x CB would mark the end man ST on the attacking team

Block 2

  • In this block the ST on the in possession team will now be allowed to drop off the half way line to join in attacks
  • This would cause a problem in the middle area of the pitch for the central players
  • To accommodate this I would now ask the second striker not to press to high and stop passing lanes into the central area and force wide
  • A trigger for the CM to press would be if they opposing CM receive the ball back to play or poor touch back towards their goal
  • If the opposing CM receives the ball the defending CM would need drop off and compact the pitch with the wide players

Block 3

  • The last block I would now allow 1x CB to drop off the line to follow the ST into the middle zone of the pitch
Challenges
  • Challenge for the reds would be can they score in either mini goal when they are in possession
  • Challenge for the blues will be to score off the transition in 10 seconds into the 11 aisde
Conditions
  • Block 1 players must stay on the half way line
  • Block 2 1x ST can drop into midfield
  • Block 3 1x ST & CB can drop into the middle zone

Targets

  • Reds must score in either mini goal

DEFENDING THE OVERLOAD SSG

Defending the Overload SSG

Pitch Dimensions: Half pitch

Player Numbers: 17 players inc GK (9v8)

Equipment: 2x goals, footballs spaced out around the outside of the pitch

  • The blue team will be defending in a 2-4-2 shape against a 1-4-3-1
  • When attacking the team are in possession they will look to either of their wide players to try and create overloads in the wide zones
Problems for Defending team
  • One problem for the defending team is when the ST of the attacking team drops into the central zone
  • To combat this I would ask one of the CB to follow with him but this could isolate the wide areas and distances to cover on the switch from the attacking team
  • To minimise chances of success of a switch of play from the attacking team I would ask the wide midfield to drop deeper denying the switch

Technical Detail for Defenders

  • Consider distances between pairs & units
  • Understand the right trigger on when to press - when one player press the units have to press together correctly
  • When they press do so quickly to minimise space quickly
  • Look to force to play back if possible
  • Allow opposing GK to have the ball and do not press unless the trigger of a bad touch occurs
  • Body shape to defend - side on ready to press or cover space behind

Tactical Detail for Defenders

  • Leave furthest player unmarked enticing the switch
  • Units move across the pitch together
  • Can the ST stop the switch and shut of passing lanes
  • One of CB must follow the ST if they drop into the middle zone

Challenges

  • When defending team win possession can they score directly off the counter
Conditions
  • Half a pitch is the playing area. The pitch would be divided into thirds as a guide for players on the pitch
Targets
  • Defending team must score in opposing goal
Restarts
  • Game will restart either with GK or throw ins. Balls are dotted around the pitch for quick restarts to hopefully create more overloads

Blocks

  • The session will be split into 3x blocks
  • Block 1 - focus on the ST stopping the switch through the GK or to the opposite CB
  • Block 2 - CB to recognise when to follow opposing ST into the middle zone & the WM to drop deeper to stop the switch of play
  • Block 3 - Free play
Interventions
  • I would use terminal interventions to get the players understand how we be stationed in our units when out of possession
  • I would also use walk through for coaching points alongside concurrent feedback whilst the ball is in play
