Small Sided Games 3v3-4v4 (25 mins)

25-Minute Game Block

Purpose: Observe → Reinforce → Re-observe

Game Setup

  • Format: 5v5 or Two (3v3)

  • Field: 20 x 30 yards or two (12x30)

  • Duration: 10 min play → 1 min break → 10 min play

  • Rules: Normal soccer, quick restarts, free flow

First 10 Minutes – Observe

Do not over-coach. Watch for:

  • Are players recognizing shooting moments?
  • Are players taking shots when space is clearly available?
  • When no shot is on, do they take one purposeful action to create it?
  • Is the dribble used with intent to shoot rather than to retain possession?
  • Are turns or changes of direction used to escape pressure and finish?
  • Does the final touch prepare the ball for a clean strike?
  • Are Week 1 shooting fundamentals showing up (body over ball, correct foot surface)?
  • Are decisions made quickly and confidently under pressure?

Mental notes only: no stopping play.

2-3-Minute Break – Reinforce

Choose 2–3 points max: based on your observation

Short. Positive. Clear.

Second 10 Minutes – Re-Observe

Let them play. Look for:

  • Faster decisions

  • Better shot selection

  • Cleaner contact

  • Players applying feedback without reminders

Praise behavior change, not just goals.

Coach Reminder

Observe first. Reinforce briefly. Trust the game.

Reflection (5 mins)

Final 5 Minutes – Player Reflection & Review

Format: Circle or kneel-in
Players: 10–12
Coach role: Listen, guide, reinforce

Purpose
Help players recognize what they learned, reflect on challenges, and connect today’s game to the main shooting concepts.

Structure (5 minutes total)

Reflection round (3 minutes)
Go around the group so every player answers one prompt (players may pass).
Choose one or two only:
• What did you learn about shooting today?
• What part of the foot did you use most?
• When did you choose power vs accuracy?
• What was challenging when trying to score?

Guided reinforcement (1–2 minutes)
Briefly connect player answers to session objectives:
• Inside foot = accuracy
• Laces = power
• Creating space off a dribble
• Shoot early when you see the moment

Coach prompts (use sparingly)
• Why did that work?
• What helped you score?
• What will you try next time?

Coach reminder

Let players talk more than you. Keep it short. Reinforce awareness and learning, not just goals.
