Expanded SSG: 4-Goal Game (15 mins)

Organization: 30*40 grid with four mini goals (two on each end line). Supply of balls on each end line. Two set ups.

Activity: 4v4 game with modified LOTG (no corners, kick-ins). Adjust according to numbers.  Each team defends two goals. Only condition: players need to check their shoulder prior to receiving the ball or possession is turned over.

Progression(s):

Players need to scan for a cone being held up by a coach on the outside and call the color prior to receiving the ball.

Coaching Points:

1. Quick dispersal - support the play and get options forward quickly.

2. Speed of play - first touch / first look forward. Take advantage of the defenders being disorganized.

3. Ways of penetrating: i) dribble ii) combining with teammates iii) playing a pass in behind (through, around, over).

4. 360 support of the ball (near and far support).

5. Quality of the pass - weight and accuracy.

6. Awareness - where are the defenders, where is open space? Check the shoulder.

SSG: Wide Play (20 mins)

Organization: 60*40 grid (can go cross field). Two large goals; Two 8*8 free zones set up on either side of the GK. Supply of balls beside each goal.

Activity: Regular 8v8 game (each team plays 1-3-3-1). Adjust according to numbers. Only restriction is that attackers cannot be challenged in the free zones whilst in possession. Encourage use of the zones to create space/width /opportunities and to build forward. Condition: teams must play into two zones prior to going to goal.  Reward a goal with possession from the team's GK.

Progression:

Limit time in the free zone to 2-3 seconds.

Remove the free zones.

Coaching Points:

1. Dispersal - create width in attack.

2. Positive touch forward. Open body position - receive on back foot.

3. Movement into space.

5. Timing of runs/passes - speed of play.

6. Play away from pressure.

Free Zone Game (20 mins)

Organization: 60*40 field at North Park (cross field). Field divided into three vertical zones. Supply of balls outside each goal. Two teams of 7 players plus a goalkeeper. Adjust according to numbers.

Activity: Teams play 8v8 (including GK). Each team plays 1-3-1-3. Regular game rules apply. Only condition is that the attacking team must play into both wide channels in order to go to goal. There is not a permanent player in the wide channels but rather players are free to roam into the channel as needed. eg. look to create overloads or create open space. Focus is on getting the wide defenders wide and into the attacking half to create overloads.

Question: How can we utilize space along the flank effectively to switch the point of attack? How can movement in and out of the wide channels help us to break down / unbalance defenders? Eg. how can forwards help to create space for defenders?

Coaching Points:

1. Dispersal in attack.

2. Mobility - off the ball movement. Where are the spaces? Cues to join the attack/move.

3. Support - proper distances and angles.

4. Look to create overloads.

5. Communication

6. Speed of play
