A whole-part-whole session on compact defending utilising a Croatia vs France World Cup Final scenario.
Learning Objective:
Coach players how to jockey in a compact defensive system.
Coach players the mechanics of stand tackling.
Coach players to move collectively as a compact unit to cut out passing lanes.
Context:
The World Cup has seen an average distance out of possession between the deepest defender and striker of 26m. Croatia and France have the exact same averages both vertically and horizontally in terms of distance between furthest players: 24m (vertically) by 32m (horizontally.) This has resulted in less space for players to take shots outside of the box. I have adjusted the size of the pitch to reflect this average size and to compact the defensive unit.

The coach calls out a number and the correlating group runs into the pitch. Croatia (red) are the defenders and France (blue) are the attackers. For example, if the coach calls out 2 and 3, four Croatians move to defend the goal against the five combined French players from 2 and 3. It tests the defensive players in various overload/underload scenarios.

SSG (10 mins)
Yellow passes the ball to France (2-2-3-1 formation) who try play in between the lines of Croatia (4-1-2 formation) to score within the time limit (see progression). Croatia remain compact and jockey the opponents. If Croatia win the ball, they look to either run to the end zone or pass it back to the coach. If France score, the coach restarts.
