Description

Purpose/Objectives: 

  • Defending in a 1v1 situation by Delay (1st defender nearest to the ball) and Support/Depth (2nd defender supporting 1st defender).

Defending Principles (U9 – U12):

1. Delay 

  • Can you slowdown the opposition?
  • Can you be hard to beat 1 on 1 & win possession of the ball?
  • Can you stop your opponent shooting on goal?
  • Can you get yourself between the ball and the goal?

2. Support and Balance 

  • Can you get behind the ball quickly?

1v1 Defending Approach at an Angle (20 mins)

Set Up: 

  • Two teams of 6 players each, 1 GK & 5 x defenders, 6 x attackers.
  • Field sizes 2 x  20 (L) x 15 (W) side by side.
  • 1 x Full size goal & 1 x mini goal.
  • 10 markers.

Action: 

  • The first two players of each red team R2 & R5 start by dribbling the ball away from goal and towards the blue gates. 
  • At the same time Y2 & Y5 cross over behind the goals and defend the opposite area and goal. 
  • R1 & R2 must enter the field by dribbling through the blue gates and start to attack in the goal in which they entered the field. 
  • If the red attacker doesn't score the yellow defender can go and assist his teammate to create a 2v1 defending situation. 
  • Encourage Y to win the ball and score between blue gates at end.
  • Game is then over when goals are scored or ball goes out of play.
Variation/Progressions: 
  • The time of sets or size of the area can be adjusted to suit the needs and abilities of the players.
  • You can adjust numbers by creating a 2v2 etc.

Player Tips: 

  • As Above.

Coaching Points:

  • Coaches technical Input. Defenders slow down when approaching the attackers in possession of the ball etc.

Session Timing:

  • Complete 4 sets of 4 minutes with a 1 minute rest in between sets.
  • Total time of work is 20 minutes.
