Football/Soccer Session (Academy Sessions): Goalkeeper - Positioning + Communication for SSG
Description
Organisation
Playing area: 35 x 25 yards (5 a-side)
Players involved: 10 (2 goalkeepers)
Duration: 20 minutes (30 second break in between. Teams will swap ends so goalkeepers swap roles after first half).
Cones are placed to split the pitch into 3 zones (thirds)
- Cones will have different colours to represent each zone
- Each zone will involve a different action from the goalkeeper relevent to the topic focus.

Key Focus: Goalkeeper Communication
The 3 different thirds of the pitch is split and marked by colour coordinated cones.
- Red cones = Defensive third
- Yellow cones = Middle third
- Orange cones = Attacking third
Execution
- This goalkeeper is tasked with communicating with their teammates based upon the position of possession.
Attacking Example: If a player is driving up the field with the ball in the middle third, but there are teammates still in the defensive third, the goalkeeper could shout "Step Up"
The outfielders will aim to follow the goalkeeper's guidance through their communication.
Aims:
- Can the goalkeeper communicate with efficient timing?
- Is the goalkeeper making the correct shouts?
- is the goalkeeper confident when communicating?

Key Focus: Goalkeeper Positioning
The goal line, penalty area and arc are marked with different colours which pairs it with a seperate third of the pitch
Execution
- Example: If the ball is within the area of the orange cones, the goalkeeper must stay on their goal line.
- As the game is being played, the goalkeeper is tasked with staying aware of their position both in and out of posession.
- Aims to encourage the goalkeeper to learn sensible areas to position themselves
- The goalkeeper can leave their postion area if they are the only player, on their team, within the defensive third to sweep the ball. However, the goalkeeper must return to their position once the ball is cleared, passed to a teammate, or if a teammate enters the defensive third.
Aims:
