Warm Up (10 mins)

Set Up:

  • Players: 10-12
  • Each cone will be 5m apart (as shown in diagram)

Instructions:

  • Players will be split into 4 groups
  • Each of the four stations will have its own skill move to focus on
  • The player will dribble to the middle cone, perform a skill move and then attempt to play a pass into the small goal.
  • Rotate groups every 1-2 minutes

Key Coaching Points:

  • Can you change speed and direction
  • Can you use feints or skills

  • Can you dribble looking up (eyes up)
  • Can you keep close control of the ball when attacking

Warm Up Competition (15 mins)

Set Up:

  • Players: 10-12
  • Cones will be 5m apart (middle square 5m x 5m)

Instructions:

  • One team will start attacking and the other defending
  • The aim is for the attacking player to dribble into the square, beat the defender in a 1v1 duel and dribble out of the square (1 point)
  • If the defender wins the ball and they dribble out of the square they get a point
  • Swap roles after 2-3 minutes
  • The team with the most points after the two rounds wins

  • Can you change speed and direction
  • Can you use feints or skills

  • Can you dribble looking up (eyes up)
  • Can you keep close control of the ball when attacking

Skill Training (25 mins)

Set Up:

  • Players: 10-12
  • Grid size: 20m x 30m (5m scoring zone)

Instructions:

  • Two teams of 5-6 players
  • The blue defender will pass the ball to the red attacker
  • As the ball is played the blue defender goes out to press
  • When the attacker takes a touch the ball is live and it is  1v1
  • The attacker must attempt to beat the defender, dribble into the scoring zone (1 point) and score a goal (3 points).
  • Switch defenders and attackers every 3 minutes

Variation/Progression:

  • Make the grid smaller
  • Make a 2v1 situation

Key Coaching Points:

  • Can you take your first touch in the direction you want to attack the defender in
  • Can you slow the defender down and then change speed to beat him
  • Can you use feints or skills to beat the defender
  • Once you beat the defender and you see the space, can you accelerate and attack it at speed

Skill Game (25 mins)

Set Up:

  • Players: 10-12
  • 2 x 22m x 28m (5m scoring zone)

Instructions:

  • 2 x 3v3 or 4v4 games (if odd numbers play with a neutral)
  • The attacking team scores by dribbling the ball into the scoring zone (1 point). If they score a goal in the small goal after beating a player and dribbling into the scoring zone that counts as 3 points.
  • The ball cannot be passed into the scoring zone
  • Play restarts from coach or from the back
