Wide Play : Rotation between Winger & FB (15 mins)
Organisation : Wide Play - Rotation Between Winger & FB
This is a pattern of play developing a Rotation with our Winger and our Fullbacks movement in behind the oppositions defence. We begin with a 1-2 combination between the two deepest players, before the central player drives forward with the ball. This is the trigger for the winger to drop into the pocket of space in-front by doing this he either :
- Gets into the pocket on the half turn free and our FB with us creating the overload
- Draws his marker out of his back 4 shape and then we look to hit the Channel, Once ball is sent in behind there defence we look to turn quickly and get ahead of our marker to help the FB with an overload.
Fullbacks trigger to start running behind there defence is the Wingers movement to drop in
- You may be able to combine with the Winger if its given to the wingers feet (So re-adjust your angle of support)
- If you see the marker marking the winger step out of shape then you should expect a ball in behind the defence
- Your job is to get the ball under control, can we find an attacking player
Front two players must rotate roles every turn, closest man looks to run into the box where the furthest man looks to get into space left behind. (Timing of movement is key, can we try pinning back the other defnders to allow Winger drag there player out)
*Second keeper or coach is at the end line, if ball over the defence doesn't hit the FB then he plays a pass to the onrushing FB who then continues the pattern and looks for that pass/delivery into the box
Coaching Points:
1. Realistic and high intensity when Winger is performing the movement into the pocket of space and sharp movement to turn when it goes behind the defence.
2. Correct weight and passing accuracy when playing the pass to feet or in behind the defence
3. Timing of the run for the FB
4. Re-Adjusting angles if ball given to wingers feet, create that overload.
5. Ensure players are aware of ball position to correctly time their movements
6. Attackers to pick up blindside areas and keep defence thinking
7. Sharp and structured movement/runs in relation to FB in possesion
Progression:
- Add defenders to the practice to apply passive pressure to the attacker
- Add mini-goals and allow defenders to actively win back possession
Player Questions:
1. What advantage does the rotation give to the attack?2. Why is practicing this pattern important in terms of player relationships?
3. How can you improve your weight and accuracy of passing when under pressure?
4. Can you give each play 100% commitment on the small details?
