Description

Session Objectives:

Technical:
1) In this session I aim to - help improve players technical approach to receiving passes. Particularly focusing on how players receive a pass in relation to where the defender is (peel away or get in front)
2) In this session I aim to - help improve players ability to vary their type of movements. Particularly in an attacking transition (Double movements, overlaps, underlaps etc.)

Tactical:
1) In this session I aim to - help improve players ability to recognise how to use patterns of play and coordinated movements in an overload to penetrate opposition quickly.
BP Principles:
Penetration
Action - Passing/Shooting
Action - Receiving*
Action - Movement/Mobility

Learning Objectives

Technical Technical
Learn to adjust body shape or approach to ball depending on where they are receiving a pass or where the target is to play the next pass (open body to receive or close body?)
Technical Tactical
Learn to be more aware of the positioning of teammates and or defenders in relation to receiving the ball in an attacking transition (Movement away from defender or in front of defender?)
Technical Physical
Learn to pass recreate attacking movements to receive the ball while fatigued or within transitioned under high intensity to replicate a match day - (improve decision making while fatigued)
Technical Psychological
Learn to understand the difference between receiving the ball away from the defender or in front of the defender and identify body language to influence attacking movements.
Technical Social
Learn to involve communicate teammates while in attacking transitions to create patterns of movement to penetrate quickly or with an overload, players will be working with different groups in attacking transitions so communication will be constant in rest periods - larning to organise each other

Passing Activation - (Work 2mins / Rest 30s x 4 rotations) (10 mins)

Practice Layout (Equipment)

  • 70m x 45m Half Pitch - Within Large Area = 6 Mannequins Hexagon within 20M x 20M space
  • 4-5 Spare Balls next to both goals
  • 2 Coaches (one either side of practice to face each other and have best view of each phase of practice + can see all players as they rotate)

    Rules/Directions:
  • Players are positioned on Mannequins and cones ready to move through a selection of passing patterns.
  • Format reflects a follow your pass rule (play the pass to teammate and must sprint to the next location.

    Mechanics:
Focus on the following mechanics within this exercise (Receiving):
  • Scanning - Identify who the pass is coming from? (locate player and ball)
  • Body Shape - Body relaxed and open or body closed? (depends on angle of pass)
  • Movement/Approach - Movement in front of defender or towards the ball to play forwards quickly or movement away from the defender open body to switch play

    Observations/Demonstrations:
We are observing here to identify if/how players are:
  •  Scanning - keeping their head up and scanning in different directions to take in information before receiving the ball
  •  Body Shape - Adjusting their body shape before receiving the ball to ensure they can take the ball on their back foot or front foot
  • Movement/Approach - type of right angle in relation to where the defender is and where their next pass is going

    Interventions:
     Moments to intervene may be:
  • Players not checking away from or in front of mannequins before receiving the ball
  • Players not scanning before receiving the ball Players are 'flat-footed' before receiving the ball or incorrect body shape/angle
  •  (Also, intervene in the opposite situations to praise positive moments and reinforce with player demo)

    Progressions/Regressions:
  • Add 2-3 balls to increase the speed of rotations and challenge players awareness and technique under more pressure
  • Add a second (bounce) pass on each or some of the phases of pattern to create different lengths of passes
  • There are 2-3 pattern variations to use so players can later emulate them in game training for extra points

    Realism:
Realism is present in this exercise as players are having to receive the ball on the move and into space as opposed to being static when receiving the ball, there is still challenge on the technique but with no opposing players it allows them to focus on the mechanics and correct them accordingly.

  • On the final pass players play a weighted through ball to their team mate to initiate a 1v1 with the goalkeeper (players are only allowed two touches to finish to encourage correct weight of pass

  • Add a second (bounce) pass on each or some of the phases of pattern to create different lengths of passes
  • There are 2-3 pattern variations to use so players can later emulate them in game training for extra points
  • Add a defender at each end to create a 1v1

    Realism:
Realism is present in this exercise as players are having to receive the ball on the move and into space as opposed to being static when receiving the ball, and there is now a target to play weighted passes to finish agaisnt a goalkeeper so there is a challenge to think about weight of pass in the final 3rd, so it is not in proximity of the goalkeeper.

Attacking Transition Game - (Work 4mins30s / Rest 30s x 4 rotations) (20 mins)

Practice Layout (Equipment)

  • 70m x 45m Half Pitch - Within Large Area = 6 Mannequins Hexagon within 20M x 20M space
  • 6-5 Spare Balls inside the goals and 3-4 with coach on sideline
  • 2 Coaches (one central to observe players movements while in an overload to score, one on the outside for holistic view of practice)

    Rules/Directions:

  • Players are positioned at the baseline of one goal and teams will alternate between attacking and defending in a 3v2 overload (e.g. 3 blue vs 2 red then 3 red vs 2 blue)
  • A ball is played into a wide area from the goalkeeper and players can then enter the area and try to score at the opposite end, attackers trying to score as quickly as possible, defenders sprint to protect goal
  • Once the attacking transition stops at one goal the opposite goalkeeper immediately plays a ball into a wide area in the opposite direction to complete a second transition
  • Once two transitions are complete give players 10 seconds or less to prepare the next group and repeat
  • If defenders win the ball, they may use the central coach as a bouncer and try to score in the goal that the game started from

    Mechanics:
Focus on the following mechanics within this exercise (Receiving/Mobility):
  • Scanning - Identify who the pass is coming from? (locate player and ball)
  • Body Shape - Body relaxed and open or body closed? (depends on angle of pass)
  • Movement/Approach - Movement in front of defender or towards the ball to play forwards quickly or movement away from the defender open body to switch play
  • Speed of Runs - acceleration into spaces behind defenders or in front of defenders to aid the transition

  • Movement/Mobility -

    Interventions:
     Moments to intervene may be:
  • Players not getting beyond the player in possession of the ball to allow overloaded team to make forward or penetrating passes
  • Players not scanning before receiving the ball or scanning to identify what may be the correct space to move into
  • Players are attacking spaces with speed and intent and not walking or jogging
  •  (Also, intervene in the opposite situations to praise positive moments and reinforce with player demo)

    Progressions/Regressions:
  • Change exercise to different overload(s) 4v3, 4v2, 5v3 etc.
  • Add players to starting positions on mannequins for attackers to have targets to regress or add defenders to starting positions on mannequins to progress difficulty
  • There are 2-3 pattern variations to use so players can later emulate them in game training for extra points
    |
    Realism:
  • Realism is present in this exercise as players are having to try and complete mechanics of receiving and mobility under pressure and with a high intensity and repetitions to mimic quick transitions in games

8v7 Overload Game - (15min Halves) (30 mins)

Practice Layout (Equipment)

  • 70m x 45m Half Pitch
  • 4-5 Spare Balls inside the goals and 3-4 with coach on sidelines
  • 2 Coaches (one either side of practice to be able to see both sides and all players efficiently)

    Rules/Directions:

  • 8v7 overloaded game
  • Normal Game rules
  • If the balls goes out on the sideline or goal line from one team, opposite team's goalkeeper plays the ball in for quick transition
  • 1pt for any goal. 3pts for goal that uses patterns from passing activation (coaches discretion use as player demos for positive reinforcement and coaching points)

Mechanics: Focus on the following mechanics within this exercise (Receiving/Mobility):
  • Scanning - Identify who the pass is coming from? (locate player and ball)
  • Body Shape - Body relaxed and open or body closed? (depends on angle of pass)
  • Movement/Approach - Movement in front of defender or towards the ball to play forwards quickly or movement away from the defender open body to switch play

  • Change exercise to different overload(s) 6v9 etc. or play with Joker
  • Create wide channels so ball must be played into a wide are from goalkeeper restarts and players can't be tackled in the channels to allow transitions to be more success

    Realism:
  • Realism is present in this exercise as players are playing on a larger pitch space with more match like numbers and there are no modifications or restrictions or where the need to play. They are now under game pressure and will mimic how they might adapt learned techniques and skills within a (attacking transition) in a match scenario)
