Breaking Lines Passing

Organization:

U19 Womens' Team

2 grids, 9 players per grid working.

10x10 grid.  Players work on a passing drill focused on one long pass forward and a through ball pass through a line into open space.

Four players are involved in play. Player 1 gives a long pass on the floor to Player 2. Player 2 receives with an open body shape, controls the ball, and gives a through ball pass into space to Player 3.  Player 3 times the run to reach the ball in space. Player 3 may take one or two touches on the ball to pass to Player 4. Player 4 will start the drill by passing the ball to the players on the other side of the square. Players waiting outside the square will take the place of the players receiving the ball after the through ball pass.  All players follow their pass, and take their positions after completing one pass.

There are two grids working at the same time.

Coaching Points: Passes must stay on the floor.  Players measure the strength of the pass and receive with an open body shape.  Players making the run into space must time the run.

Progression: Players limit their touches to one touch only.  Players may use the up-back-through to combine with the third player.

Time: 10 minutes

6v3 Position Play With Breaking Line Pass

Organization:

10X25 grid with a defensive and attacking halves, and a middle line where 2 defenders are trying to intercept the through ball pass.

2 grids on the field.  9 players per grid.

6V3 positional game with four small goals.

Play starts with Player 1 passing to Players 2 or 3 in the defensive half of the grid. Only one defender is allowed in the defensive half making it a 3v1 game.

The goal is to make a through ball pass to Players 4,5 and 6. The defensive players standing in the middle line will try to intercept the pass. If the ball gets through to the attacking half of the grid, the blue players must score.

If the blue team breaks the line, only one defender is allowed to defend on the attacking half.  They get one point if they score.

If the ball gets intercepted, the defenders must transition into the attack and try to score on the two small goals placed on the defensive half of the grid.  The three defenders are allowed to score, only Player 1 will defend if the blue team loses the ball.

Coaching Points:

Blue team must play the safest pass.  If there is no space to break the line, they must keep possession of the ball until they find the space.

First defender works hard to win the ball.  The two defenders on the middle line work together to not give any space for any through balls. Communication is key.

If defenders gain possession, their first pass is directed to the first defender for a quicker attacking transition.

Attacking players combine and communicate to score.

Blue players on the side keep an open body shape to receive the ball.

Time: 15 minutes

6v6+6 Position Play Rondo With Breaking Line Pass

Organization:

20X35 grid.

6v6+6 positional play game with a through ball pass to keep possession of the ball.

Blue team looks to keep possession of the ball, and after completing 10 passes, they will attempt to break lines by sending a through ball pass to Orange team.

Green team will start defending by sending two players into the Blue Team's half, and will look to gain possession of the ball. If they gain possession, they will transition into the half, and will look to keep possession of the ball.

If Blue loses the ball, they keep two players in the grid, and send the other 4 players to the middle line.

Any team that is defending, always sends 2 players to pressure, and the other 4 work together to avoid any break line passes.

Team that loses possession of the ball transitions into defense.  Team that wins possession, transitions into one of the teams that is keeping possession of the ball.

Coaching Points:

Players that are looking to keep possession of the ball make quick passes to transition the ball from side to side.  Players are limited to a maximum of two touches.  May play one touch if they want to.

Make ten passes and then break the line by sending a through ball pass to other half of the grid.

Defending team applies pressure, works together and communicates well to intercept the pass.

Progression:

There is no minimum amount of passes before breaking the line.  Players keep possession of the ball until they find the space to break the line.

Time: 20 Minutes

6v6+2 Finishing on Goal

Organization:

20X35 grid.

6v6+2 positional play game with a through ball pass to two attacking players who will then try to score.

Blue team starts the game with the goalkeeper playing a short pass to Player 1. Blue team keeps possession of the ball, and after completing 10 passes, they will attempt to break the line by sending a through ball pass to Players 4 or 5 from Orange.  If Players 4 or 5 get the ball, they will try to score as quick as the can. Two Green players must transition into the Orange half to defend the goal.  This creates a 2v2 situation in the attacking half.

Green team will start defending by sending three players into the Blue Team's half, and will look to gain possession of the ball. If they gain possession, they will transition into the attack and try to score on the Blue Team.

Any team that is defending, always sends 3 players to pressure, and the other 3 work together to avoid any break line passes.

All three teams will rotate positions in the game.  Each team will spend six to seven minutes playing defense.  The other two will start the attack, and finish on goal.

When the ball transitions from Blue to Orange, Orange will start the game bringing their 5 players into the field, and Blue will transition into the finishing team, therefore, they will keep two players in the half, and send the rest to the sidelines.  Players will rotate roles so everyone on the team has a chance to score.

9v9 Game Conditioned Game

Organization:

Field is divided into three grids.  The center grid is 64 yards long. The other two grids are 10 yards in depth, and are free of defenders.

9v9 game with goalkeepers included.

Game starts with the goalkeeper from any team playing a short pass to the attacking team.

All field players are restricted to the 64 yard zone.

Attacking  players will look to keep possession of the ball, and must combine with each other to send a through ball to one of their players that will time a run into the 10 yard attacking area. If the player gets through, other three players from the attacking team will cross into the attacking area, and two players from the defending team may also cross into the area to defend their goal.  This scenario will create a 4v2 game in the attacking areas.

Coaching Points:

Players must keep possession of the ball in the center zone.

Attacking players must make timed runs into the attacking areas.

All players must communicate clearly to call for runs, or intercept passes through the attacking zones.

Attacking team in opens up and finds open space.

Defending team creates a 4--3-1 shape to close up any open space.

Progression:

Take away the three zones and make it a 9v9 game.

Emphasize the use of breaking lines and timed runs.

Time: 25 minutes
