Organisation (Practice Layout & Transition)

See the guidance at the top of this page to understand why you are not seeing interactive Football/Soccer images.
Practice Set-Up/Layout:
Coached Team (blue) playing 1-4-4-2 diamond, set up with GK, 2 FBs, midfield 3 and front 2 (1-2-3-2).
Opposition (Red) playing 1-4-2-3-1, set up with GK, Back 4, 2 DMs and 1 CAM (1-4-2-1).
Half-pitch practice with a goal at each end for the teams to attack.
3 blocks of 4 minutes, with 1 minute terminals:
Block 1 - Opposition defend deep and allow GK to have the ball
Block 2 - Opposition press high onto GK
Block 3 - Defending approach alternates, consolidate learning
Block One - Playing against low block
FBs maintain width and play high enough to break first line, but maintain enough depth to make it hard for oppo FBs to jump onto them.
Once we play into the wide player, can someone rotate wide to create a 2v1.
Decision point for defender - to track runner or not to. If tracks runner, can we created passing lane into feet of out number 9 and get a CM to jump to join the attack. If defender does not track runner, can we exploit 2v1 in wide area.
If the opposition manages to defend against this with a good handover of men, can we switch out to the far side, either through GK/CDM or playing into 9s and back out to exploit width on far side of the pitch.
Block Two - Playing vs High Press
If opposition locks on man v man in midfield and looks to jump to press the GK, we should still look to play out to wide player originally. If their FBs are more aggressive in jumping onto the FB, either CM or ST should rotate out into space created by FB jumping out. If they are followed, can someone else rotate into the space left behind by them. If they defend well against this, can we find the free player to switch out to the far side and exploit the space in the far wide channel.
If we attract one of the midfielders to jump out onto our GK, can we find the free man in midfield either directly or by playing out to FB to play back in?
Can we get someone rotating into midfield, either ST or FB if we can get a CM rotating into a wider area to create some pace in central areas.
Block Three - Consolidate Learning
Defending team will decide in the moment when to press and when to sit off. Can we find the right solution depending on their decisions.
Key Topics to reinforce:
Find Spare Player
Movement to create overload
Commit Opponent (dribbling to commit then play)
Ball Speed (including slowing down to tempt the press before speeding up)
Position Specific Instructions
CM - co-ordination between all to maintain depth, width and height.
Movement to create space for each other.
Interchanging positions
Playing on outside shoulder and look to break lines where possible
Join in with FB to create wide overload
FBs - High enough to break line, deep enough that FB won't jump to man for man. (Sometimes may go high to commit then drop deep to become free or to bring opponent to create space).
When to roll inside to create overload, when to maintain width.
Be ready for switch to come out and exploit.
STs - When to stay high, when to drop in, when to roll out wide.
Awareness of options to set for support underneath.

Practice Set-Up/Layout:
Coached Team (blue) playing 1-4-4-2 diamond, set up with 2 FBs, midfield 4 and front 2 (2-4-2).
Opposition (Red) playing 1-4-2-3-1 flat, set up with GK, Back 4 and 2 DMs (1-4-2).
Half-pitch practice with main goal for blues to attack and two mini goals on half-way line for reds to attack.
2 blocks of 4 minutes, with 1 minute terminal:
Block 1 - Exploit Central 3v2 overload to create through middle of pitch
Block 2 - Rotation of CM into wide area to create 2v1
Conditions/Challenges/Targets:
FB must retreat behind white line at each restart
CDM must remain behind white line at all times, but can work across the pitch
First pass cannot be played direct to FB (must play to midfield or strikers first).
Defending team have 10 seconds to counter-attack and score in either mini-goal.
Block One - Exploiting Central Overload
CMs drop to receive and take up position on the outside shoulder of the two defending CMs.
Use lending passes to commit opposition to press ball, can we then use a quick combination to find the free option, who should receive on the half turn and be able to break the line.
Once we achieve this, can we drive at opposition to create 3v2 and finish the attack.
FB join the attack once play is live, and can be used, but priority given to creating through the central area.
Block Two - Exploiting Wide overload
CMs can drop in, or peel wide, with initial build up following similar pattern. This time, can we find the CMs to break the line and look to commit the oppo FB, working with own FB to create a 2v1. Could also look at FB inverting to create central overload before playing wide.
Look at technical inputs in timing, disguise and weight of pass to exploit the wide overload.
