Game Phase: 14/16 Players 8 (reds) v 5 plus GK (blues) - 4 v 3 overload in central area, 2 v 1 overload in wide areas
Rules:
- Wide areas only accessible by Attacking Wide Players and Full Backs and Defensive Full Backs
- Defensive Full Backs can only press Attacking Wide Players when ball played into wide area. Defending Full Backs have to press
How to play:
- Coach plays ball to an 'Attacking' red player in the central area. Reds have to play complete 4 consecutive passes. Once they have done this they can play wide (left or right) to a wide midfielder. As soon as this happens attacking Full Backs and Defensive Full Backs are activated 'in play'.
- Defensive Full Backs have to press wide Attacking Midfielders
- Wide Midfielders and Full Backs have to combine to maneuver the ball into the shaded areas.
- As this happens the Attacking 9 and 10 can attack box, the opposite wide midfielder can also attempt to get into the box to assist the attackers. The Defensive 4 and 3 can also drop to Defend the goal area.
What does initial success look like:
- Combinations between 3 and 11 and 7 and 2 to get the ball into the shaded area
- If 11/7 receives can 7/2 get round the outside and overlap for the ball in behind
Progression - Painting more pictures of combinations to get the ball into the shaded areas:
- As play progresses and the Defenders come wiser to the patterns of play can the Red Attackers look for alternative ways of accessing the shaded areas.
- This brings the Red 6 and 8 into play who can look to receive the ball inside from the 11/7 and play into space for the 3 and 2 to run on to.
- 9 and 10 to stay high for balls into feet from Full Backs to lay off wide but don't come too deep that ball goes wide, and nobody in box when Wide players looking to cross.
- If 11 or 7 get into shaded areas and Defensive Full Backs have followed tightly to stop the cross, can the Attacking Full Backs push forward to support for the ball to be played back to them so they can cross the ball
Progression - Painting more pictures for the Attacking 9/10 and opposite Wide Midfielder when attacking the box.
- 9 and 10 may switch (9 goes back post, 10 attacks the front post, opposite wide mid attacks penalty spot for 'pull back'
- Position of the Central Midfielders, one hovering on the edge of the box for any 2nd balls, the other providing cover if Blues cleanly win the ball and look to break out.
If Defensive Blues win the ball can they look to score in the wide goals as quickly as possible, this reflects them countering and hitting a wide player early.
Triggers: Players to think about 'body shape'.
- If 11/7 receives and is under pressure so can't get turned to go forward, can 2/3 look to support behind.
- If 11/7 receives and can instantly get turned to face forward, can 2/3 look to support in beyond
- If 11/7 receive the ball and is facing 'inwards' can central midfielders quickly support and provide 'wall pass' option

Game Phase: 14/16 Players 8 (reds 2-4-2) v 6 plus GK (blues 3-2-1)
Coaching Points:
Recognise Triggers:
- When ball goes into a 11 or 7, do the Fullbacks have an opportunity to 'get forward' and assist the attack
- If 11 or 7 receive ball facing back to their own Full Back can they look to combine either back to 3/2, into Central Midfielder 6 or 8, who plays into wide area for 11/7 to pivot and run on to
- If 11 or 7 received the ball and get turned to go forward, can 3/2 get beyond the Wide Midfielder to create over lap
- Alternatively, can 11/7 be confident to go 1 v 1 with Defensive Full Back, attack the Goal Line and then pull the ball back to the supporting 2/3
Players to think about team mates 'body shape' and use as information, for example:
- If 11/7 receives and is under pressure so can't get turned to go forward, can 2/3 look to support behind.
- If 11/7 receives and can instantly get turned to face forward, can 2/3 look to support in beyond
- If 11/7 receive the ball and is facing 'inwards' can central midfielders quickly support and provide 'wall pass' option to on running Full Back or pivoting Wide Midfielder

14 - 16 Players (Split into 2 Groups)
Activation Drill: Overlapping Runs with Finish
- Blue Player passes ball forward to Blue Player
- As soon as ball is played Red Defender runs out and presses the ball
- Blue Player who has played the ball forward sprints to create overlap option
- Blue Player who has received the ball runs at speed to draw defender
- Decision is then made, either play the overlap or if Red Defender covers the overlap, Blue Attacker goes alone to finish on goal.
- If decision is made to pass the ball and the Blue Attacker is already beyond the Red Defender then they are 'offside'
Looking for intensity, aggressive purposeful running, quick effective decision making, good timing and good finish
Technical: Passing (weight), Timing (Right time to Act), Movement (Speed and Direction), Finishing (Corners)
Physical: Speed (Attacking with purposes, not slow and predictable), High Intensity from all players
Psychological: Decision making (choosing right time to pass or go alone), running with confidence
Social: Teamwork
