Set Up

4 cones set in a dimond shape within the six yard box as seen in the picture, one red cone to the right, yellow to the left and Blue to the front in line with the penalty spot.

3 x Goalkeepers required for drill, placed in the positions as seen in picture.

Extra balls placed to the side.

Aim

To get the keepers working on their general handling, working through collecting the ball using various techniques

Conditions

  • GK1 starts with the ball, he throws it above chest height to GK2 who is waiting in the set position, GK2 catches it (ensuring he is using the correct Mechanics) and returns it to GK1 who in turn is waiting in the set position, again, above chest height, GK1 throws to GK3 and so on. This pattern repeats until the coach is satisfied that the correct Mechanics are being used.
  • GK1 again starts with the ball, he throws it below chest height and above knee height to GK2who is waiting in the set position, GK2 catches it (ensuring he is using the correct Mechanics) and returns it to GK1, againwho is waiting in the set position, below chest height and above knee height, GK1 throws to GK3 and so on. Again, the pattern repeats until the coach is satisfied that the correct Mechanics are being used.
  • GK1 again starts with the ball, he passes the ball accross the ground to GK2 who is waiting in the set position, GK2 collects the ball (ensuring he is using the correct Mechanics) and returns it to GK1, again, who is waiting in the set position, passing the ball on the floor, GK1 to GK3 and so on. Again, the pattern repeats until the coach is satisfied that the correct Mechanics are being used.

GK1 being in the centre will receive and distribute the ball more than the other two GK's, rotate the centre player so all receive similar ball rolling time.

If one GK is having dificulty with a specific mechanic then he can have more time in the middle to allow him to improve upon it.

Challenges

  • Have the GK's feeding the ball in with non-dominant hand/feet, this will help them gain confidence in using  them.
  • Vary the feed, have the GK's feeding the ball bounce it in or add a bit of spin.

Key Coaching Points

  • Set Position: Head fixed on ball, Elbows bent, Hands out in front and the width of a football apart, Feet shoulder width apart, Nose in-front of toes, Knees bent and heels up.
  • Above Chest - W's: Arms out in front of you with elbows slightly bent, Thumbs together forming a W with the forefingers, Rest of fingers spread out, Eyes fixed on ball, Weight forwards.
  • Chest to Knees - The Cup: Little fingers together, Palm of hands facing out (must catch in hands first), Fingers spread, Body Shape over the ball slightly (to help cup the ball nto the body), Weight Forwards.
  • Knees to Floor - Scoop: Feet Together behind the ball, Bend at the hips, Little fingers together, Palms showing towards the ball, Fingers spread around the ball to collect it.
  • Knees too Floor - Long Barrier: Move into line of the ball, Get sideways on and kneel with no gap between your heel and knee, both legs should be sideways on to form a barrier, Eye on ball, Little fingers together, Palms toward ball, Fingers spread, Weight slightly forwards.

Progression 1

  • GK1 now moves back to cone on the goal line.
  • When coach says start, GK1 moves towards GK2, when GK1 is between the cones, GK1 assumes the set position and shout's 'SET', GK2 then volleys the ball towards GK1 above head height, GK1 catches and rolls the ball back to GK2, GK1 then repeats with GK3.
  • When Coach is staisfied, again, move through the various general Mecahnics.
  • When Coach is satisfied with all Mechanics, GK2 & 3 are to vary how they feed the ball into GK1.

Challenges

  • Have the GK's feeding the ball in with non-dominant hand/feet, this will help them gain confidence in using them.
  • Vary the feed, have the GK's feeding the ball bounce it in or add a bit of spin.

Progression 2

This time, rather than advance either side to each GK in turn, coach will call out a colour and the GK will advance to which ever cone matches the colour called. When the GK reaches the cone he assumes the set position and the ball is immediately played into him.

When coach is happy with how the drill is progressing he can pass on to the GK's feeding the ball to call the colours, by putting the onus onto the GK's it should help build Vocal confidence.

Challenges

  • Have the GK's feeding the ball in with non-dominant hand/feet, this will help them gain confidence in using them.
  • Vary the feed, have the GK's feeding the ball bounce it in or add a bit of spin.
